B-29 Workhorse'
In Korea But
Is Now Obsolete

J he B-29, the , workhorse of
World War II, Is also a work
horse or the Korean Wai But
and this breaks the heart of many
. a World War II pilot it is ob
solete. Nonetheless, B-29 losses in Ko
rea have been comparatively low.
Official figures show that B-29
have flown more than 12,000 sor
ties in Korea, against 17 losses.
. Six were shot down by ground
fire and 11 were lost to enemy
aircraft.
An undisclosed number of
. others have been lost in so-called
' non-operational accidents.
One reason for the compara
tively email number of B-29 los
ses is the fact that since last fall
we no longer operate them in
Korea during daytime.
: Too Expensive
We found out early that it was
. too expensive, even with a strong
escort, to send them against the
IMIG's along MIG alley across the
' Yalu river from the Red Chinese
base at Antung. Some of the
MIG's inevitably got through the
screen. .
" Now, with improved radar-tech-;
niques, their night operations
probably are just as effective as
daytime; and at the same time
have reduced the necessity of
sending out large formations in
order to supply protective fire
power.
Another Korean workhorse is
the B-26 a twin-engined night
night intruder that goes out look
ing for enemy convoys. The men
who fly them are on their own
up there in the darkness, and
their chances of ramming head
on into a mountain are better
than their being shot down.
This series has made no at
tempt tp discuss two other types
of airplane seeing heavy duty in
Korea.
One is the helicopter whose
pilots take it In under heavy

said work on projects now un

ment on those projects which
best fit into the region-wide plan

An earlier committee state
ment adopted in December did
not include Hell's Canyon and
Ice Harbor -as ' "recommended"
dams but recognized them as "an

Harbor by fishery interests.,

1. Measure and sift together into bowl

A cup sugar
Make a well in center and add
Vj cup egg yolks (6)
yH cup cold walor
1 tabloipoon lemon juice
' 1 feaipoon vanilla
Beat until mixture forms, a smooth, mod
erately thick batter.
, 2. Measure into very large mixing bowl
1 cup egg whiles (7 or 6)
I teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon salt
Whip (use rotary beater, or electric mix
er) until very rVie foam forms throughout.
Add gradually, 2 table-spoors at a time
V cup sugar
Continue beating until meringue is firm
and holds up in straight peaks when
beater is gently lifted out.
9. Pour batter slowly over meringuewliile
gently folding in with spoon or rttlher
scraper. Fold in jui until blinded. Do
not stir. Gently push batter into iingrt-ascd
tube pan, 10x1 in. Lift lair portion lightly
from bowl to pan. Carefully cut through
batter, going around tube 5-6 times with
silver knife to break large air bubbles, be
sure batter is level in pan.
4 Bake 50-5) min. or until top springs
back when li&htly tout bed. Immediately
turn pjn over, pljcing tube part over neck
of funnel or bottle. Let cake hang until

with spatula. Turn pan over and hit edge

cup coffee beverage
Vi cup white corn syrup
Stir to combine ingredients. Bring to boil
and cook to hard crack stage, 310 (or
when a small amount is dropped into cold
water it will break with a brittle snap).
Remove from heat and immediately add -
3 teaspoons toda, free from oil lump
(Btfll ietf through fiat titte, mttikte light! j.)
Stir vigorously just until mixture thick
ens and pulls away from sides of pan.
(Mixture foams rapidly when soda is
added. Do not deitroy fo.im by exceuite
heating.) Immediately pour foamy mass
into uncreased shallow metal pan (about
9x9x1 Vi in.) Do not spread or stir. Let
snnd witlwut moving until cool. When
ready to garnish cake, knock out of pan
and crush between sheets of waxed paper
with rolling pin to form coarse crumbs.

1 equal layers. Have ready crushed Coffee
Crip Topping. Place in a chilled bowl
2 cups whipping cream 11 plntl
7 lobteipoom sugar
2 leotpoeni vanilla
Whip until cream holds its shape. Spread
about half of whipped cream, between
layers and remainder over top and sides.
Cover cake very generously and thoroughly
with crushed Coffee Crisp Topping.
(Whipped cream should be tntirey cov
ered.) With straight knife indicate cut;
ting lines on top and down sides of cake.
Keep in refrigerator until served.
