Senators Want Protection For Servicemen, Families Washington, July 19 HP) Sen ate investigators demanded to day that the defense department do something to protect service men being "shamelessly victim ized" by rent gougers near mili tary camps and being forced to live under conditions that are "a disgrace to America." They said the problem gravely threatens "the morale of our fighting men" and called upon the department to do something about it Immediately. The report, prepared ' by the senate preparedness subcommit tee, said servicemen and their families are being forced to live "amidst appalling filth and Inde scribable squalor" near camp Breckenrldge, Ky., Camp Rucker, Ala., and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. It said servicemen and their families are being forced to live In garages, tool sheds, chicken coops and In one case a shack built of whiskey bottles and beer cans. v ' Increases Common It said rent Increases of 100 per cent on "substandard hous ing" near the three -camps are "commonplace." In some Instan ces, It said, servicemen have been "gouged" with 500 per cent rent boosts. Committee chairman Lyndon B. Johnson, D Tex., documented the report with photographs be cause "some of the hovels were so hideous that they could not be described adequately by mere words." The report said, service fam ilies in the three camps are forc ed to bid against one another for homes without heat, without run ning water and with "generally disgusting" sanitary conditions. Some service families kept the lights-on "in order to keep the rats away," the subcommittee said. It said that in a converted gar-. age near Camp Breckenridge, a six-month-old baby . was bitten three times by rats after a ser geant's wife turned out the lights to let her baby sleep. The mother then was refused the use of her landlady's telephone to call for help. . The subcommittee, said that "dozens or landlords',' in the camp areas are flouting rent control directives by charging extra for parking spaces, washing water, and similar services in a philos ophy of " 'get what you can'." Charges Made "The Inescapable conclusion," the sub committee said, "la that in too many instances service- ' men are being shamessly victim ized at the hands of clvUIans whose property and lives the men in uniform are dedicated to de fend ..." Like the "rat house" and the chicken coop (rent $27.50 ' a month) the "bottle "house" was discovered by subcommittee In vestigators near Camp Brecken ridge. Two "shabby" rooms sep-' arated only by a counter are in side the buUdlng which Is made of mortar, whisky bottles and beer, eans with a few .large oil cans "for variety." 3 laid ' Deal daptod o weed cf mount to tpraod & boppy amw.
