The three nations who will con
tribute the core of his forces
America, Britain and France
are having trouble agreeing on
almost anything these days. There

France and Britain lining up
against the United States. . ;
Strategy Considered
For a-long time military men
have proceeded on the theory that
it the Russian army starts march

will reach the - English : channel
In a matter of weeks and that all
of continental Eurepe except
Spain and Portugal will be over
run. Britain,-according to their
i calculations, will remain in allied
hands and it will be an extremely
Valuable piece of property.
Actually it' would be an unslnk
rable aircraft carrier from which
the allied air forces could strike
back' at Russian nerve centers
with atomic bombs and at the
red troops in tactical raids. But
almost everybody accepts the the
ory that to deal the knockout
blow in a world war you must
send troops in -to grapple with
the enemy army. The "push ac
tion" theory, of warfare has been
discredited in Korea.
That's where Spain comes in.
The soldiers look at it longingly
as a possible beach-head from
which a land counter offensive
could be started against the Rus
sian army. Spain is protected on
the north by the Pyrenees moun
tains, and a comparatively small
lorce could' fight a lengthly hold
ing action there. . -
Situation Surveyed
"Admiral Forrest' P. Sherman of
the American joint chiefs of staff
went to Spain to survey the sit
uation. He undoubtedly has been
talking about bases from which

operate and he seems willing ,to
give the Spaniards weapons and
industrial machinery in exchange
tor the right-to base planes and
ships on the peninsula.
France and. Britain are object
ing. Most of the talking they are
doing is based " on ideological
grounds; they take the position

Real Cause Cited :
That may be a factor in their
viewpoint, but it is not the de
termining one: What France' and
Britain really are worried about
but what they are- soft-pedalling
as much as possible, is that they
do not like the idea of the Unit
ed States spreading- its supply
of weapons . and war machinery
too thin. In addition the French
probably feel that if the United
States reaches an agreement with
Spain it will encourage- the Idea
of abandoning France to the Rus
sian army, They Would like to
see U. S. equipment used to de
fend Paris rather than Madrid.
Eisenhower's problem Is that
he has to plan for military ac
tion in the midst of one diplo
matic tug of war ' after another,
in. world war II his job was eas
ier because there was a sense of
urgency about everything. People
had to hang together or- hang
separate. As of now the European
nations are fearful of commu
nism, but not quite enough so to
make Eisenhower's job, an easy

Those are two of the conclu
sions drawn by George D. Warner,
51, of Cleveland, Miss., based on
his 30 years experience In selling.
Warner moved up-the business
scale from a $2-per:day stevedore
to his present position of vice
president of a million-dollar hard
ware concern.
"My observation over 30 years
of studying - homespun philos
ophy is that blondes are not only
much quicker to buy than bru
nettes bur are much quicker to
become dissatisfied with - their
purchases," . Warner said.
"I have reason to believe that
in any department store, more
merchandise Is-; returned by
blondes than by brunettes, and
less by redheads .than -either of
the other two classifications."
; Regarding fat people he said:
5 "Fat people's feet usually give
them trouble -and they naturally
are more 'comfortable sitting
down. The more comfortable they
are, the easier it is to sell them.
"A fat person is an easier mark
for a salesman late in the after
'noon than early in the morning,"
Warner said, "because as the day
progresses, so does the ache In
his. feet His resistance is low in
the afternoon."
