(IB An exhibit of "cure-all" gadgets displayed dur ing a meeting of the Mississippi Medical association seemed to prove that the American public would swap penicillin for a pana cea any day. . In 1796. Dr. Elisha Perkins took out a patent on two small pieces of metal resembling a child's spin ning top which he christened the "Perkins Tractors.". The tractors were advertised in this country and in England as a sure cure for anything from brok en bones to dandruff. All a suffer er had to do was to press the sharp ends of the tractors against wherever he felt a pain and ob tain immediate relief. Dr. Perkins made a fortune un til he treated himself for yellow fever with his own tractors. He died. :.': However, the old doctor was a piker compared to modern-day manufacturers of cure-all gadgets and machines. Light Waves Used One of the largest items oil ex hibit . here , was . the "spectra chrome" machine, which operates under ,the theorjf that all human frailties, result from being out of harmony with the color waves of the universe. The spectro-chrome emitted a multi-colored light in which a pa tient was supposed to stand for one hour. The machine was guar anteed to cure anything. Manufacture of the spectro chrome was halted by federal court action in 1947 but many of the machines are still in, exist ence and are being used, by hope ful sufferers.
