Some of the most recent vol canic action in Oregon occurred on the flanks of the ancient mountain known as Newberry, geologists report. Around (he base of the huge shield volcano of the epoch known to geologists as the Pleistocene, age of ice, there are more than 150 parasitic cones which were once flaming volca noes. ', Forest Kiiguirnil From a fissure on the north west flank of Newberry crater issued a flow of molten rock that engulfed a pine forest. Evi dence of this forest remain as rocky molds lhat formed when the lava chilled around trees. In this area is the Lava Cast forest of the Deschutes country. Forest service officials plan to mark the charcoal forest location as one of the features of a crater that holds volcanic attractions that range from America's most spectacular obsidian flow to pum ice cones that overlook two of tlie stale's best known trout lakes, East and Paulina. Washington, July 14 din De fense off.cials declined to spec ulate today on the fate of more than 10,000 American fighting men missing in Korea. Some are prisoners of the com munists. Some undoubtedly are dead. But defense; officials would not make any estimates on how many were in each group. In propaganda broadcasts and party newspapers', the reds have given the names of about 2,000 Americans as prisoners. Bur U. S. officials have been unable to make any confirmations. . The. reds have flouted interna-,, tional rules on exchanging infor mation on prisoners oi war as set forth 'in the Geneva convention. They have refused to furnish the International Red Cross with names of prisoners or to permit Red Cross representatives to visit prison camps, r According to the latest casually summary, only 158 Americans arc known to be prisoners of the communists. In addition to the more than 10,000 still missing in action, an other 1,300 once missing have been found. In World War II, the army Including the air. force had a to tal of 175,000 missing. Nearly 80 per cent,, about 138,000, finally returned. Of the 175,000 prisonei-s accounted for numbered 126,000. About 12,000 prisoners died In en emy hands, with 114,000 being freed, ..: - UN Occupation (Continued from Page 1) ll'sion between the two approach cs. ' ' Peiping radio asserted that the communists desired re-estanusn- ment of the pre-war border along the 38th parallel, this time pro tected by a neutral zone 10 kil ometers wide. 1 This reporter's information Is that, to quote a substantial source, Gqn. Matthew B. Ridgway "has not the slightest idea of moving back from his-present front lines. No Retreat. "We are now 20 hard-won miles north of the parallel at some points and are certainly not vol untarily going to present to the enemy the build-up triangle of Chorwon, Kumhwa and Pyong yang which we now either hold or interdict." The quotation also ties in with the third point given above that until the source of world communism-Is met and defeated, any peace in Korea will be both trail sicnl and uneasy, and that'll would be folly lo lot the same enemv group re-attack. "Too many American lives were lost because our premature cieci sion lo remove the 6th and 7th divisions in 1948 created a vac uum promptly filled by the, com munists," is the way one source phrased it. 1 There Is complete unanimity among the military leaders here right down the line on the neces sity for maintaining a large oc cupational force In Korea. This is diametrically opposite to the cemmunist demand for the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Krrea. Objectives Unchanged The thinking here is that the soviet objectives have not been changed one lota by the military reverses in Korea. As one officer told me, 'the Chinese have lost half a million men, (he flower of their army. They have made de mands forlrcraft and pilots up on Russia which Russia is reluc tant to meet.' Rather than risk involvement in a general war, Russia has decidcVI to call a halt to the military mlsadv.enlurc In Korea and to change her tactics lo Hie political field. ' "Therefore, withdrawal of . all foreign troops from Ko.ca would put tne professional propagand ists of the north in position to infiltrate the south, stage dem onstrations, uprisings, bring about chaos and soon replace the republic of Korea with another soviet satellite slate, as is Norm Korea today and all lands border ing it China and the Russian maritime provinces. Oi'ciipalion Antlclpiiled "The U.N. must maintain1 a large force in Korea continuously lo maintain the peace and ensure free elections and the peaceful functioning of a small republic attempting lo live inside a ring of communism." This means, in the opinion of all with whom I have talked here and al the front since the Kae song negotiations began, that a largo American force must he maintained here for an Indefinite period. The American military leader ship points out, however, that the individual soldiers presently in the field may all expect to be re turned to the U. S. in the months following the cease-fire with a certain percentage of them being replaced by new troops from Ihc homeland. There is a divergence of mill- i tary opinion as to how long the ! occupation must last. A more op timistic segment p-iints lo Japan I about 1 "g on her own" six years jailer the war closed, and with 'little danger from communis) sources. I A mere grim opinion Is that ! protective forces must remain in Korea milil what this group be I lieves Is the inev, table war with I (hp basic enemy, Russia, is fought i and decided. American Males Lack Zip, Star Says; Blames Women Bv John Rosenburg (United Frees Staff Correaiwndcnt) New York 'IK Romantically speaking, men aren't the men they used to be and it's all the fault of the women. That, at least, is the contention of Barbara Ashley, one of Broad way's newest musical comedy stars, ! - ' ' Miss-Ashley says the boys just don't, have that old romantic zip" any more. They're not as aggressive as they once were, sne contends, and they've "lost their gallantry and romantic initiative. "Why, they re even airaid oi ME," she said, her black- eyes flashing. "Can you imagine that? Frightened of Women "It's not only me. Men appear to be frightened of women in gen eralparticularly good looking, talented women. Every stage door in town is proof of .it no more Johnnies. Out In Hollywood, it's the same way. Scores of beautiful Body of Kidnaped (Continued from Page 1) engraved on the inside of band, and by the dress and the the black pumps the , pretty : nionoe was wearing when kidnaped. A cigarette container and light er were found nearby. The light er 'was marked with the initials "F. W. K.," which could stand for Frank W. Krlsty, the, stop father, the sheriff's office said.. The body was . dressed in a green and white print dress which answered the description of the dress worn by the girl when she was taken from her home at gunpoint. - . Fears Borne Out Discovery, of the body appar ently bore out the fears of the girl s mother. ' . ' "I know you'll find them both dead," Mrs. Kristy sobbed short ly after the pair dropped from sight last week. - Krlsty stalked into the white washed bungalow where his wife and her two daugniers lived and kidnaped Betty Jean, his shapely 20-ycar-old stepdaughter at gun point. .
