Prices for Cars
Washington, Feb. 21 Indus-
try sources indicated today price

industry statistical agency, said
production for the first six weeks
of 1951 was 768.000 cars. If pro
dc.tlon was maintained at tht
rrte. the total for the first half
of the vear wouH slightly exceed
1950 when 3,100,000 were turned
out.
However, Chrysler, -which
mnkes about 20 per cent of the
Industry total, was Idled 100 days
last year by a strike, and Pack
ard and Kalser-Frazer were turn-
im; o"t cars at a low. rate. Thus
the 1951 figure, spokesmen said,
would be misleading.
Head of Crime
Laboratory Quits

crime laboratory in Portland, re
signed late Tuesday when his de
partment - was brought under
fire at a hearing before the house
committee on state and federal

Richardson' had been head of
the laboratory since 1946. State
police .superintendent H. G. Mai
son -accepted his resignation. -The
committee was considering
a bill to take the crime laboratory
from under the control of the
state police. Local law enforce
ment officers told the committee
that they had not been getting
good cooperation from the state
pol-.ee crime laboratory.
Richardson claimed that the
state police did not give him a
fiee hand in selecting personnel.

Montague, ex-Canadian mountie,
humoristi and author, declared
last night when speaking before
members of the Bend Knife and
Fork club at a Pilot Butte inn
dinner. Montague, for many years
in the service of the mounted po
lice and Jiow a resident of Cal-
norma, naa Arctic Adventure
as his subject He was introduced
by Rev. Fred C. Wissenbach,
president of the dinner club.
- Montague touched on the train
ing of the mounties and his var
ied experiences in the northern
Canadian wilderness. He told of
the vast territory patrolled by the
mounties, said that in 76 years
they had only failed to get their
man on 12 occasions, and declared
that a. force of 390.000 men with
the training of the mounties
could-patrol the world for, the
United Nations. "

Street Clean-Up.
Prineville, Feb. 21 The local
chamber of commerce at its
luncheon yesterday approved the
proposal made the week before
by Municipal judge William B.
Morse, who is also president of
the chamber, that prisoners, serv
ing out sentences in the city jail
be put to work cleaning up a city
park and sweeping streets.
Richard F. Houk, president of
the chamber last year and now
chairman of the street committee
of the ctiy council, said such a
program will be welcome. Houk
said that efforts to keep the
streets clean are hampered by
lack of funds.
" The chamber membership con
sidered the prison work proposal
when the complaint was made
that city streets were unkempt.
Mrs. Dolly Hodges Fessler also
noted that the Pioneer park, lo
cated just east of the county
courthouse, had become dirty and
unsightly for lack of care.

aluminum windows and on ducts
may be completed up to June 3f

up to June 30 provided that or
ders for them were received by
the manufacturer before yester
day. Between now and June 30, man
ufacturero of aluminum windows
are restricted to 65 per cent of
their average monthly use of
aluminum in the first half of
1950.
The national production au
thority and the federal trade com
mission announced jointly that a
snot survey will be made among
aluminum fabricators to determ
ine whether they are carrying
out NPA regulations.
The NPA has deslgnted the
FTC to conduct such surveys and
inquiries among various indus
tries. The results will be used
both as a basis for planning fu
ture orders and If necessary for
"appropriate compliance action."
The aluminum fabricators were
chosen for the first such Bpot
check.
