Student Nurse
Tells of Terror
After Kidnaping
Naomi, W. Va., Nov. 7 tilt
Student, nurse Ann Tabor. 17. ac-
aused a married school teacher
today of making her his "kidnap
ed" bride and 'knocking' out a
tooth when she tried to flee dur
ing an eight-day 'honeymoon" of
terror.
The pretty teen-ager said only
"divine providence" helped her
escape Lewis Daniel, 35, who was
held in the county jail at nearby
Beckley on formal charges of ab
duct ion.
The nurse, her face swollen and
one of her teeth missing, describ
ed for police a harrowing eight
day trip with Daniel through
Ohio and Kentucky. She said he
forced her to marry him last
week at Grant, Ky., and beat her
when she tried to run away.
She said that Daniel took her
from in front of a nurses home
In Charleston, W. Va., Hie night
of Oct. 29 before the eyes of her
fellow students.
Prayers Answered
"I prayed ever since I went
away," she said, "and I guess my
prayers were answered.
Miss Tabor, In a state of se
vere shock and near hysteria,
returned home yesterday In a
taxlcab from Beckley. She said
she fled from a hotel room there
wfcere Daniel had held her. Other
days, she said, she spent on the
floor of his automobile.
"He struck me several times
when I tiled to get away," she
said.
A physician under whose care
the nurse was placed said she
was "pretty badly beaten up."
Daniel denied he held the girl
captive and said she went with
him willingly.
Miits Tabor's return home end
ed a widespread search which ex
tended as far as New Mexico.
Authorities who examined her
said there was no indication of
criminal assault.

12 Survivors of
Lost Battalion
By Glenn Stackhouse
United Preea Staff Correepondent)
With the 24th Division, Korea,
Nov. 7 UPl Twelve survivors of
the U. S. 1st cavalry division's
"lost battalion" reached safety
here early today, footsore and ex
hausted after struggling for six
days and nights through hills
death-trapped by the Chinese com
munists.
A 13th survivor was killed acci
dentally by American fire as the
party passed through allied lines.
ah of the men were members
of the 8th cavalry battalion, which
was rapped and cut to pieces by
tne (jmnese reds near unsan a
week ago.
Pfc. John T. Schlinlng, 42, Chi
cago Heights, 111., said his com
pany was attacked shortly after
dusk on Nov. 1 by enemy soldiers
who crept up on them through a
cornfield while American artillery
was firing.
l guess there wasn t more
than a couple of hundred of them,
but they seemed like thousands to
me," he said. "They jumped us all
of a sudden, with hand grenades
and burp guns from close range.
Attack Too Strong
We fought back with machine
guns and rifles, but the attack
was too strong for us. We with'
drew to a hill, but they ran us
oil."
About 175 men remnants of
two companies escaped about 3
a.m. and made their way to an
other mountain, where they lay
hidden all the following day with
enemy patrols constantly around
tnem.
"At ahout 5 p.m., we decided to
make a banzai attack of our own,"
Schlinlng said. "We got up and
went charging down the hill. veil.
ing and screaming and shooting
like hell.
'We caught the Chinks by sur
prise, and they didn't stop one of
us. About a mile away, we came
on to another cavalry company
pinned down In a diamond-shaped
entrenchment, so we charged
rignt into them.
''There were ahout 100 of them
left, with 10 dead and about 50
wounded. They were out of chow
and water, and almost out of am
munition. They were pinned down
by four machine guns.
The surrounded Americans held
the trenches for the rest of that
night and all the next day, but
tnen' they had to get out at a
minute s notice.
Tanks Moved lip
"They moved up some tanks
and started dropping white phos-
pnorus (incendiary shells) on us,
Schlinlng said. "We came out of
the trenches in a hurry.
I got one machine gunner
with my M-l (rifle), but the other
cut us up pretty bad. The machine
gun bullets sounded like a heavy
rainstorm.
Schlinlng and 12 others headed
due south, and got away. Another
group started southwest but ran
into heavy fire.
"I don t know how many of
them made It," he said.
The 13 survivors hid in the
hills, under brush and among
trees, during the day and traveled
south during the cold nights.
"Those Chinese were pretty
smart. They would come in from
the lines in the morning, take off
their uniforms and put on the vil
lagers' white clothes, They would
lie around In plain sight all day,
with American planes overhead
all the time. In the evening, they
would change hack Into uniform."
Killed by Own Fire
Before dawn today, the 13
Americans reached friendly terri

6 Steps Listed '
Dr. Bishop stated that "one of '
the most important measures to
prevent permanent hearing diffi
culties is early detection and
treatment.'' She listed the follow
ing six steps as the goal of the
hearing conservation program:
l. Hearing tests a prelimin
ary screening test by audiometer.
a retest immediately of pupils
failing the tests and then later a
pure tone or pitch audiometer test
for each Individual who failed the 1
second group.
2. School history teacher's '
statement of the child suspected
of having a hearing defect.
a. Heaitn officers inspection.
4. Conference with parents In
group meetings or by home calls
uy tne puouc nealtn niirse.
o. Medical examination and ne
cessary treatment by the familv
physician or ear specialist select- :
eu Dy tne parent.
6. benool adjustment of chil.
dren indicated in the medical ex
amination as being handicapped
in hearing.
"Generally speaking," Dr. Bish
op said, "if Impairment is found
early, a cure may be possible. If
allowed to continue a permanent
impairment or deafness may be
the result." . ' ., . . ..
