Duffy Increased the mess hall
guard from 11 lo 21 men. They
will continue to patrol the mess
hall floor unarmed. .; However,
; armed guards are always sta
tioned on catwalks overlooking
the hall.
The first disturbance broke out
: Friday night, Duffy said, when
2,100 of the prison's 4,800 inmates
were in the hall. He said Irving
Cornel, a 27-year-old Los Angeles
rapist, started a fight with a
mess attendant. Two floor guards
moved in . to break it up.
Other prisoners began booing
and milling about, apparently in
an attempt to shield . Cornell.
Guards restored order by firing
.over the prisoners' heads.! .
Food Involved :
A few minutes later, James
Stones,- Los Angeles robber, took
..: food from another table despite
; a warning from guards not to do
so. That provoked an uproar from
200 convicts seated in one sec
tion, who began throwing trays,
food and utensils and shouting at
guards. Again the guards fired
overhead to restore order. ,
Saturday night, a third disturb
ance took place when convicts
started hooting and booing as
they entered the hall. Guards

United Nations it would have
been impossible to send Ameri
can troopa to the aid -of the uv
vaded republic of South Korea.
He disclosed that 53 of the 59
UN nations have offered aid in
either men or materials, thus
stamping approval on American
action in Korea.

ing station, announced today that
he has received orders to change
the station's hours to 8 a.m. to
5 p.m. six days a week.
The office was formerly on a

Marine Corps Calling More
Men In General
Washington, Aug. 21 lift The
marine corps began sending or
ders to district reserve directors
today for 50,000 officers and men
In Its voluntary reserves. !
The reserve directors, in turn,
will relay the orders to individ
uals needed to meet the demands
of each marine corps branch.
The move is part Qf a general
mobilization drive announced last
week to bring the corps' manpow
er up to 174,000, enough for two
full strength divisions and two
full strength air-wings plus extra
support and administrative units.

Speed-up General
The marine corps' action mark
ed a general speed-up in the en
tire mobilization program. De
fense officials explained that
they have taken care of all- the
preliminary decisions just how
many and wnat servicemen are
needed and the recall machinery
can now be thrown into high
gear.
Here is a summary of the gen
eral mobilization picture:
Army Calling up 8,432 cap
tans arid lieutenants, in 16 arms
and services: 1,582 up to major in
the medical and medical service
corps and veterinary corps and
up to lieutenant colonels In the
dental corps, and 62,000 enlisted
men from its reserves who are
not assigned to organized units.
National guard Four divis
ions and two regimental combat
teams soon will be heading for
training areas. In addition, a
number of non-divisional units
already are in training areas and
more will be going. No other di
visions will be called this year
under present plans.
Air national guard Three or
four air groups will get orders in
the next few weeks. They . will
train as close air support for the
guard divisions.
Navy calling some officer
and enlisted personnel on an in
voluntary basis. It declines to say
how many.
Air lorce Calling 8.000 offi
cers and 42,000 airmen from its
reserve pool. The bulk are sched
uled, to be on duty by early fall.
Selective sendee Calling 50,
000 draftees In September and a
like number in October for the
army. New calls for 50,000 in No
vember and 35,000 in December
are expected to be made shortly.

The individual hunter of pre
war days almost Has become ex
tinct and organized hunts have
driven crocodies ' into inaccessi
ble regions. ;
That poses a major headache
for the industry and crocodies
may have to be protected to some
degree to safeguard the indus
try. Crocodiles now are classed
as vermin and may be killed on
sight.

Contrary to popular belief,
there is little danger Involved In
catching crocodiles. In the main
crocodile area on Lake Victoria
crocodile are fished. Hooks are
baited with large pieces of raw
meat and placed on rocky shelves
in shallow water.
The crocodile swallows the
hook along with the bait and
injures himself internally trying
to escape. Then hunters haul the
crocodile ashore and kill it with
heavy wooden clubs. By this
method the skin is undamaged,
Shooting is a poor way to hunt
crocodiles, for unless the croco
dile is killed immediately it will
sink and the skin is lost. '
Most individual hunters use a
harpoon gun. The barb is shot
into the crocodile, which Is hauled
to the bank. :
East Africa has no tanning fac
tories and skins are sent over
seas, usually to America or Brit
ain, for processing.
