tlie draft under existing law.
The two, bills approved today
were : the manpower measures
asked for by President Truman In
his Korean crisis message to con
gress Wednesday. . .
The house will vote on both
next Tuesduy, The senate sched
ule was not disclosed immediate
ly, but early action and passage
seemed certain.
Senate committee approval of
the two bills was unanimous. In
the house group, Rep. Harry L.
Towe, R., N. J., cast a lone vote
against them. He said he would
oppose them "until they (defense
officials) say what they arc going
to do."
Brig. Gen. C. V. R. Schuyler,
chief of the army's planning
branch, told the house committee
Uie call for more fighting men
was decided upon by the Joint
chiefs of staff, He said the joint
chiefs, also agreed that possible
developments in Korea or else
where .could mean a' further "up
ward revision" on short notice. ,
To Reopen Camps'
He added that there are tenta
tive plans for reopening some
world war II army camps, but he
did not say which ones. v
Under .the present draft law,
only men 19 through 25 are sub
ject to induction and veterans of
the past war are exempt; except
in cases of men who served less
than three months. '
Schuyler said the army can
equip all the men It needs for
training purposes, but will have
to buy "in some categories" to
make them ready for battle.
The fighting services already
had their mobilization program in
high gear to provide reinforce
ments for the hard-pressed Amer
ican forces in Korea.
The mnrlncs yesterday called
up all their organized reserve
ground units 47,000 officers and
men while the army alerted an
undisclosed number - of regular
units for far eastern duty, and
the navy ordered several ot its
organized air reserve squadrons
back on active duty Immediately.
An early call for national guard
units also was expected momen
tarily. , . . -
There are 33.000 in the na
tional guard ground units. The
units are composed 01 as intantry
divisions, two armored divisions,
20 regimental combat teams, plus
l,2sb assorted units ot varying
size. These extra Units include
anti-aircraft, field artillery and
medical specialists.
Guard officials said they are
ready to provide .whatever .the
joint cnicis 01 stall asrt lor, mn
they hoped no regular divisions
would be broken up.
Orders Written Hi)
Army, navy and air force
spokesmen said orders are being
written up as rapidly as possible
lor tnc recall of individuals and
units needed to bring the services
up to planned strength. Reserv
ists will.be "permitted" to. com
plete a minimum of one year in
uniform, they said.
The armed, forces lor the first
ime since Ihe outbreak of the
Korean war were calling married
men, some with children. One de
fense spokesman said the reserve
units "unquestionably" Include
some married men. who will be
called along with single men.
None of the services would say
exactly how many men were In
volved in the latest defense
moves. ' '
But 11 was known that the ma
rines' organized ground reserves
totaled 47,000 officers and men.
The first division, en route to the
far east, numbers about 7,000
men, contrasted with wartime
strength of 23,000.
The army alerted "combat and
support" units in each of the six
army areas, but It did not Identify
them. It said only that they will
be moved to the far east "In the
near Iuture."
The recall of naval air squad
rons will permit, the navy to
strengthen various missions, but
spokesmen refused to say 'exactly
how they would be used. The first
nir group called by the navy was
a Chicago combat . unit. It was
ordered 'lo report this morning
for training at the Glenvlew
naval air station.
