Robot Used
In Atomic Plant
Hanford, Wash. UI'iDevelop
ment of a remote-controlled, mo
bile robot that can perform nearly
any operation expected of a hu
man hand was announced by Gen
eral Eletric engineers here.
The five-ton, one-a r m e d ma
chine is used, at the Atomic
Energy commission's plutonium
plant. It enters areas declared
unsafe for human beings because
of radioactivity.
Engineers say the mechanism,
resembling a railroad handcar and
rolling on narrow gauge tracks,
can open doors, turn valves, dis
assemble and assemble complex
machinery and even pick up a
dime from the floor.
. An operator manipulates the
robot from a control panel, view
ing it through a three-foot mirror,
also remote controlled. Six ca
bles link the machine to the con
trols, set in an adjacent room.
The arm itself looks somewhat
like a small caliber naval gun. It
can be telescoped to extend or
shorten its reach, be' raised and
lowered, and be rotated.
The hand part Is capable of
gripping, pushing, pulling and
turning.
Engineers say 30 electric mo
tors, six in the arm and hand,
furnish power for the unit. Op
erators learn to manipulate it in
about a week.

Mr. and Mrs. Meade Pedersen
are parents of a daughter, Jean
nette Carol, born on June 10.
This is their second child and
both are girls. Mr. and Mrs. Pe
der Pedersen are the paternal
grandparents.
Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Clayton are
visiting at the E. W. Paul home.
They have been visiting in Med
ford and Ashland where ,they plan
to make their home.
Appeals to federal agencies for
help have been just as fruitless.
The FBI, for instance, has no au
thority to investigate gambling.
The only thing treasury agents
can ao aoout siot maenmes is col
lect a tax on them. ... . . ,
The Kefauver committee, how
ever, has the unique authority to

facilities of any of the fefieral
agencies to help it in accomplish
ing its mission to expose organ
ized crime in the U.S.
Under its able chief counsel.
Rudolph Halley veteran of the
famed Truman war investigating
committee the committee is be
ginning to make full use of Uncle
Sam's law enforcers. In addition
to its own staff of about 10 ex
pert Investigators, the committee
will have use of FBI-agents. Se

tors, narcotics agents, bureau of
internal revenue agents and even
the intelligence officers of the
armed services. '
The experts who have Been fol

this array of law enforcement tal
ent, coordinated into a single ef
fort, would be powerful enough
to lay bare the facts on the syn
dicates operations. The protec
tion, through political corruption,
which the syndicates have bought
nave' made them that impregna
ble. Halley reveals that . his group
will not operate from any master
plan or master timetable. During
the first week of operation he re
ceived hundreds of tips, hunches
and offers of information on var
ious criminal activities around
the country. He will begin in
vestigating what look like the
hottest leads first, wherever they
happen to point.
Investigations in the various
cities will be quiet, fast and sure,
he promises. All sources, news
paper reporters, local police, in
formers, public officials and pri
vate citizens who have informa
tion will be given an attentive
ear. His men will use the element
of surprise whenever possible.
Members of the committee
themselves might hold open hear
ings in various cities. And that
most powerful of all congression
al probe weapons, the subpoena,
will be used to bring any persons
involved straight to Washington
for hearings.
Two U.S. agencies have already
taken big steps to aid .Kefauver's
group. The federal communica
tions commission has requested
all telephone companies to keep a
permanent record of the details
of all long distance calls. This is
aimed at exposing those who use
the long distance lines for gamb
ling operations. The telephone Is
a very necessary instrument. In
