Rival companies, caught open mouthed by the surprise agree ment, are studying the pact with awe and some apprehension. GM's success in pinning down Walter P. Reuther to five un broken years of guaranteed labor peace caused the amazement. Reuther's warning that the set tlement would be the union's 1950 pattern Jolted some other auto makers, particularly those still to reach agreement with the UAW. Will Cost Billion UAW experts estimate the five year pension program, annual four-cent hourly wage boosts and hospital-medical and insurance plans will cost the giant corpor ation at least $1,000,000,000. General Motors' first year out lay will be about $144,000,000, the union srvs, with the ante polng up $32,000,000 a year until 1955. Reuther, who Jubilantly heaped praise on the unprecedented agreement, can't serve new de mands on the two other big three members, Ford and Chrysler, un til next year. It's the smaller firms, such as Hudson, Packard and Briggs, which might be in cluded in the "1950 pattern." Includes Pension Plan The Chrysler contract, forged in the table-pounding heat of a 100-day strike, provides a three year contract and five-year pen sion plan. But the contract can be opened twice on economic mat ters. Ford, too, has a five-year pen sion deal, but its contract runs only until April 1, 1952, and Reu ther may make only wage de mands on that firm next January. Labor traditionally has opposed long contracts, preferring fre quent showdowns on its increas ing demands. And there is some grumbling among the rank-and-file In the UAW against the ap parent long-term trend. Reuther Serves Notice Reuther served notice on the auto Industry that "we are not committed to either the GM cost-of-living formula or five-year agreements." But the militant union chieftain makes his plans long in advance, and they are ambitious plans. . "If each of the 60.000,000 wage earners in the country got todny what the (General Motors work ers did," he savs, "by 1954 and 1055, there" would be a 42 billion Increase In the nation's real pur chasing power." He told a senate public works sub-committee that 36,000 miles of new roads and trails are need ed for "reasonably adequate pro tection and proper use of tne na tional forest resources." The needed roads and trails would cost $034,000,000. George M. Long Strike Faced By Weyerhaeuser Tacoma, Wash.. May 25 UPi A lengthy strike by 9,000 mem bers of the International Wood workers of America (CIO) was predicted today by a qualified observer following yesterday's breakdown of negotiations by the IWA and the Weyerhaeuser Tim ber Co., over the union shop issue. The two parties broke up here despite efforts of federal media tor Leo Kotin of Portland to settle the 11-day-old strike. During the discussion, IWA representatives turned down a company hourly wage increase offer of 10 V4 cents, which Weyer haeuser made because it said it could not match the settlement made by the rest of the industry May 13, the observer reported. The wage increase would have been a substitute for the com pany's previously offered pension plan, other weliare benefits, and a union proposal tor paid noil- days. However, tne oner was refused by the IVvA when the company again turned down the iWA s demand lor a union snop. The observer remarked that there is no settlement possible on the economic issues umil tne union shop dispute is resolved be cause the posnton of tne com pany and the union remain rigid on the granting of a union snop.
