Daily
1950 Business
Boom'Seen
Chicago tut A University of
Chicago finance professor says
that business is more likely to
slump than boom in the lust half
of the year.
Garfield Cox, dean of the uni
versity's school of business, said
he believes, however, that this
will be a year of overall stability.
He made the forecast at a sym
posium on "the business outlook
for 1950."
"A large federal cash deficit
during prosperity is in the long
view seriously disturbing, but it
seems '- unlikely to generate re
newed price inflation in 1950,"
Cox said.
"The wholesale price index is
not unlikely to move very far
trom its present level, fubiic
spending probably will Increase
no more than business spending
shrinks. '
"Unless bad weather cuts crop
yields, any strength the general
price index shows In the next
few months is likely to be more

The cool front will bring back
a touch of winter to most of the
country, forecasters predicted,
and by tomorrow temperatures
will be lower as far east as west
ern Pennsylvania and as far
south as northern texas.
The front will bring tempera

North Dakota flood area, the
forecast ers said. A high of about

Truman Seeks
G.O.P. Foreign
Policy Support
Washington, April 18 m
President Truman, in an unusual
bid to strengthen bi partisan for
eign policy, pledged today to take
republican views "into serious
account "
Mr. Truman's pledge was con
tained in a stalement issued after
a lengthy While House confer
ence with Secretary of state Dean
Aeheson and Sen. Styles Bridges,
R., N. H.
Bridges said Aeheson indicated
a desire for an arrangement
whereby republican leaders would
be consulted and informed in the
development of major elements
of U. S. foreign policy.
Conference Satisfactory
Mr. Truman- said in his state
ment that he called in Bridges
because he is "the ranking re
publican in the senate" in the
absence of Sen. Arthur H. Van
denberg, R., who recently under
went an operation.
The president, describing the
conference as "very satisfactory,"
said :
"With the problems facing the
United States in the field of for
eign relations, it Is most important-
that every effort be made
to maintain a true bipartisan
foreign policy.
"It will be my purpose as well
as that of secretary Aeheson .not
only to keep members of the mi
nority currently informed, but lo
solicit their views and take them
into serious account in both the
formulation and implementation
of our foreign policy."
Bridges said he regarded the
meeting as "an evident gesture"
on the part of Mr. Truman pnd
Aeheson "to establish closer re
lationships with the republican
minority in the senate."
