Registration will get under way Friday, with Mrs. George Sim erville, Mrs . 'Charles Overbay, Mrs. Robert Dudley, Miss Sylvia Vcalch. Mrs. Craig Coyner and jlrs. E. Sims, Wilson in charge. Luncheon meetings are planned (or Friday at the Pilot Butte inn and Saturday at Trinity Episcopal parish hall, and highlight of the session will be a banquet Friday night at the Elkhorn country club. A pie-conference open house will be held Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. Carl Johnson, 498 Broadway. In the receiving line will be Miss Wilma Jacobson, new president; Mrs. C. E. Strana nan. retiring president; Mrs. Rob ' ert Dudrey, treasurer; Miss Ivy Grover, vice-president; Mrs. Wal lace Van Hise, recording secre tary, and Miss Myrle Lilja, cor responding secretary. Officers requested that local members obtain their tickets for meals from the registration desk at the Pilot Butte inn Thursday afternoon or evening, or from Mrs. Overbay, 1024 Harmon, be fore the conference opens. Business sessions will be. held in the library auditorium. Plans for the conference reach ed their final stages today, with delegates expected to start arriv ing Thursday. Registration will start Friday at 9 a.m. in the Pilot Butte inn, with the opening ses sion set for 9:30 in the library auditorium. At the Friday luncheon, at 12:45 in the Pilot Butte inn Blue room, Dr. Phoebe Morrison, AAUW international relations as sociate, will be the speaker, with "The Citizen Looks at Interna tional Relations" as her topic. For the occasion, Mrs. Steinhauser has planned decorations, featur ing a world-wide theme in keep ing with the speaker's subject. At me i-Tlday night banquet, James W. Bushong, Bend superin tendent of schools, will speak on Community Colleges in Oreeon." Mrs. Ratliff has planned decora tions toiiowing the college theme. For the Saturday luncheon, a program telling the story of the recipients of AAUW Internationa study grants has been planned. It win oe presented by members of the Eugene, Lakeview, Medford, Portland and Salem branches. The stage will be set by decora tions featuring costumes and other mementoes from the coun tries represented. Mrs. B. E. Mar vin has created a group of papier mache heads to represent the countries. For this affair, to be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Trin ity Episcopal parish hall, Miss Lilja will arrange decorations. Home Economics club of East ern Star grange will meet Thurs day, April 20, at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Harold Harbour, on Butler road. Garden Club Plans Show, Fills Offices Plans for the annual spring flower show and election of offi cers highlighted the meeting of the Bend Garden club held Friday at the home of Mrs. Pearl Lancaster. Friday, May 5, was chosen as the date ol tne snow, wnicn will be held in the library auditorium. Mrs. Fred Hutton is general chairman for the event. Mrs. T. A. King was elected president of the Bend club at the meeting. Other officers elected were: Mrs. Virgil Surfus, secre tary; Mrs. Stella Nelson, first vice-president, and Mrs. Percy Madden, second vice-president. The flower show will be a non competitive exhibit, it is announc ed, and the public is-invited to en ter flowers and arrangements. Plans for the event include a series of tables with arrange ments carrying out the calendar theme, an arrangement for each month of the year. Tea will . be served throughout the afternoon. There will also be a plant sale in conjunction with the flower : At the meeting Friday,1 Mrs. Joe Werner presented the pro gram, which was on the topic of massed blooms. Daffodil arrangements were brought and judged for points. Judging of the arrangements awarded Mrs. Roy Ullrick, first; Mrs. Stella Nelson, second; and Mrs. John Mihelcich, third. . Bend Delegation Back From Trip To Grand Session Miss Nadine Pepin and Miss Nancy Forrest were, chosen to represent the states of Utah and Wyoming, respectively, at a cere mony held in connection with the Jobs Daughters grand bethel ses sion last week at Coqullle. The girls were delegates from the local bethel. Others attending from Bend were Misses Mary Lou Hudson, Carol McCormack, Doris Aspin wall and Noriene Fredericksen. Mrs. W. A. Hunnell and Mr. and Mrs. George McCormack. Mrs. Hunnell just completed her term as grand first messenger for Jobs Daughters, and Mrs. Mc Cormack is a past guardian of uiinei ino. a, Portland. The Queen's hall, the "riauph- ters' hour" and competitive drills on Saturday afternoon were high Itehls of the session. Rebekah Head Honored Friday By Bend Lodge More than 100 members of the Rebekah lodge attended a dinner Friday evening honoring Mrs. Lola Ramsey of Madras, president of the Rebekah assembly of Ore gon. The affair was held in the i.o.o.f, hall. Pink and green decorations with "Welcome Lela" in pink and green letters and large bows over the doors were arraneed bv Mrs. Oscar Anderson. Mrs. Carl John son was head of the dinner committee. At the business part of the meeting delegates to the state as sembly to be held at Astoria in May were elected. They are Mrs. Walter Hall, Miss Kathryn Kelley, Mrs. Carl Johnson and Mrs. A. B. Burleigh. Alternates are Mrs. C. E. Hein, Mrs. Rollo Morgan, Mrs. Clara Smith and Mrs. Martinus Anderson. Mrs. Hein was recom mended as district deputy presi dent for the term May 1950 to May 1951. Members Initiated New members initiated at the meeting were Mrs. H. R. Wight man, Mrs. Corbin Weber, Mrs. Arden Olsen, Mrs. Conlee Land ers, all of Bend and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Trueax of Tumalo. The guest of honor, Mrs. Ram sey, was presented a table mirror and crystal swan by Mrs. Fred Gibson. A poem, written for Mrs. Ramsey by Mrs. A. B. Burleigh, was read as a presentation speech. Mrs. Gibson also presented a pair of candle snuffers to True Rebekah lodge of Terrebonne. Mrs. Branchie Clark, vice-grand, was present to receive them. An invitation was read from Juniper Rebekah lodge of Mad ras, asking local members to at tend their meeting Tuesday, April 18, when Mrs. Ramsey pays her official visit to her home lodge. Social Calendar 'Peg O' My Heart' Booked for 23rd The third and final play in the CivicDrama feslival sponsored by the Jaycee auxiliary will be pre sented Sunday, April 23, at 8 p.m. in the Allen school auditorium. A professional Broadway cast will present "Peg O' My Heart," by J. Hartley Manners. The play is described as "a heart-warming comedy of the trials and problems of an ador able Irish lass who is compelled to spend the summer with her rich relatives." It has been a fa vorite attraction on the straw-hat circuit, being played by some 15 dnlerent companies and by such stars as Julie Haydon, Fran Ben tore, Lenore Lonergan and Joan Blondell. CIITRCH DINNER SET The monthly church night pot luck dinner of the First Christian church will be hold in the social hall of the church Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., It has been announced. F ollowing the dinner, there will members who have joined the fel lowship of the church in the past church year. Baptist Women's union will meet Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Redmond Baptist church, for an all-day meeting with the Baptist women's group there. Pot luck luncheon will be served at noon. Britons Facing More Austerity London, April 18 IP Britons were told today that they are in for another year of high taxes, austerity and frozen wages. Chancellor of the exchequer Sir Stafford Cripps told commons that the nation still cannot at ford any considerable reductions In taxation. He proposed a 1950 51 budget of $9,674,000,000, an increase of $224,000,000 over 1949-50. Tho largest item of extra cost was for the national health service, Britain's version of socialized me dicine. "All the attractive suggestions put forward for remissions of taxation must be put firmly on one side," Cripps said. "We have not yet reached the state of af fairs when considerable reduc tions are advisable." He said the government in tends to continue all present eco nomic controls, which were at tacked bitterly by Winston Churchill's conservative party (luring the campaign for the Feb ruary 23 general election. Bulletin Classifieds Bring Results Old-Timer Irked At Rescue Move La Grande. April 18 ll-i Ed Taylor, 69-year-old mountain re cluse, refuses to stay "rescued." A census taker, Mrs. Gertrude Weiss, went Into the mountains 28 miles southwest of La Grande with an experienced guide and found that Taylor had been con-' fined to his isolated cabin for five weeks by illness. "He seemed almost too ill to walk," she said. She organized a rescue party of Mt. Emily camp employes and Taylor was brought out by stretcher, protesting every inch of the way that he wanted no aid. Speaker for the convention will be Rev. Stanley A. Baker, presi dent of the Christian Endeavor union of Great Britain and Ire land. His theme will be "Build With Christ." Central district union officers who will have a part in the state meeting are Mrs. Ralph Henry, junior superintendent; . KBND Towers Now Completed The erection of two 200-foot ra dio towers to be used in KBND's new 100 watt broadcasting opera tion was completed yesterday with the installation of lights and painting, a KBND official an nounced today. Work on tne towers was De- gun several weeks ago. They were assembled on the ground in 10 foot sections, each of which was guyed and then raised into position. It was also announced that phasing equipment, designed es pecially for KBND by an eastern factory, is scheduled to arrive this week and will be installed in the new transmitter building. Last week an RCA transmitter was Installed at the site and ear lier a ground system, using more than 13 miles of copper wire, was installed. When all installations have been completed, testing required by the federal communications committee will be started, the official said. The location of the transmitter site may be reached by driving out two miles on Butler market road and turning left at the coun ty road which comes back lo Bend by way of east Third slreet. Steals Own Car From Police Omaha, Neb. (ill Henry H. Ronnau, 27, escaped from police and later stole his own car from right under officers' noses. But he didn't get away with It. Ronnau was accused of leav ing the scene of an accident. Po lice said he Jumped out of his car after it had bumped another one, and ran away. Later, he "stole" the car from the police parking lot.
