Agriculture officials said this could mean cheaper prices for turkey during the holiday season next fall. The agriculture department an nounced that for the first time In nine years there will be no sup port for 1950 crop of turkeys and chickens. This is the first year since 1941 that supports are. not required by law. The decision was made In the face of reports indicating that farmers are planning to boost production of poultry meat this year. Russian Subs May Face Check San Francisco, April 13 ail If a navy ship finds any Russian submarines within three miles of the California coast, it may "take any steps" to bring them to port, Adm. Russell Stanley Berkcy said today. Berkcy, who is en route to Washington to take over duties as the navy's chief of informa tion, said that "inside territorial waters, an American vessel could take any steps to bring a submarine to port." But owlhide the thiee"mile lim it, international law calls only for an exchange of identifica tions. Many Senators Close Relatives Washington, April 13 till An I official report has disclosed that 28 of the 115 senators who serv ed during i ho fiscal year ending June 30, 1949, had close relatives on their office payrolls. The renort. which rlid not rils. I close the tluties or salaries of these relatives, was issued yester - day by Senate secretary Leslie L. Biffle. It presented a detailed breakdown of the expenses of sen ate operations during fiscal 1949. The senator with the most rela tives on his office staff was Sen. Arthur V. Watkins, R., Utah. At varying times, they included one son, two daughters and a daughter-in-law. But Watkins' daugh ters merely worked for him for a few weeks. Sen. Dennis Chavez, D., N. M employed a son and daughter, and the late Sen. John H. Overton, D., La., employed two daughters at intervals during that period. Not Illegal There is nothing illegal in the employment of relatives by a member of congress. (Hi Ohio Is the only state In the union which has a greenhouse flower, the red car nation, as Its flower emblem. No one seemed to know why until Erwin Zepp cleared up the mystery. Prompted by an article In rcv. eral newspapers which ques tioned why the "florists' flower" was chose as the emblem, the curator of the Ohio Archaeolog ical and Historical society pro duced the answer. He said section 29 of the gen eral code of Ohio shows that the scarlet carnation was adopted as a token of love and reverence for the memory of President William McKiniey. The carnation was the presi dent's favorite buttonhole flower. Afler he was assassinated, the , Ohio legislature adopted the flower as the state's official em blem. All other states In the union lnvo native wild flowers as their official emblems. Use classified ads in The Bulletin for quick results.
