Representatives of Further Develop (Continued from Page 3) planned to continue the grade 5.274 miles, carrying it to a point west of the Todd lake road, but Pearl Harbor and war intervened to interrupt the program. Al though Deschutes county did maintain the grade in the war years, progress toward the Elk lake goal remained halted from 1941 until last summer, when for est highway funds again were ap propriated. Enough funds were allocated to award three contracts. Work on two was begun late in the year but halted by winter snows. All three are scheduled for comple tion this summer. Besides the 8.637 miles of surfacing already mentioned, contracts call for clearing and grubbing a 7.610 mile section from the Devils lake area to Elk lake, and grading from Dutchman flat to a point about a mile west of the Todd lake road. More Work Duo Soon If all goes well, by autumn more than half of the distance to Elk lake will be surfaced and an other quarter or so graded. under the federal-state pro gram, as each section of the high way is surfaced, it will be turned over to the state highway depart ment to oe inciuaea in tne state s highway system.
