' I Flames whipped through the i oil-lubricated mechanisms of two j presses last night before being ; extinguished. Business manager Victor F. j Dunsmore said damage was "at least $150,000" and might be as high as $500,000. I Managing editor John B. T. ', Campbell said today's editions of I the Herald. Catholic Abbot Target of Czechs Prague, Czechoslovakia, March 31 W A Roman Catholic abbot pleaded guilty before the state court today to high treason and espionage, nadio Prague reported. The broadcast said that Augus tin Machotka, abbot of the pre monstrate monastery at Nova Rise, Moravia, confessed "carry ing out espionage and committing high treason on orders of the Vatican hierarchy standing high in the services of American capi talists." He was said to be one of 10 high-ranking Czech priests put on trial today before a five-man sen ate of the state court in Prague's Pankrao prison. The other nine defendants were not identified immediately. The broadcast said Machotka told the court he went to Rome in 1947 to confer with heads of premonstrate monasteries. Confession Denied On his return, he said, he talked with the abbot of the Prague pre monstrate monastery and the de puty general of the order, iden tified only as Jarolimek. They outlined the "fight against the people's democratic regime," Ma chotka was quoted as saying. Machotka said Jarolimek em phasized the importance of firm resistance to the government's land reform and school laws, ac cording to the broadcast. The school law gave the government complete control of church schools. "Machotka also admitted he re ceived and spread anti-state heck, ling leaflets outside the monas tery," the radio said. It took the fire only an hour and 15 minutes to burn the ware houses to the ground yesterday and destroy an uncounted num ber of beds, mattresses, refrig erators and other equipment. Origin of the fire was unknown.. March 31 (Special) A Central Oregon Youth Rally will be held April 18 at the Turn alo grange hall. Bend, Redmond, Prineville and Tumalo will be represented. A potluck dinner will be featured, with Tumalo furnishing the main dish. The Prineville delegates will bring the beverage; those from Redmond, the dessert; the Bend First Meth odist group, the rolls, and the First Presbyterian represent atives, the dessert. ' Redmond will furnish the main entertainment, and the Bend Presbyterians will arrange for the worship service. Each society will give a skit or some other form of entertainment to round out the program. The Misses Anltra Sandwick and Patsy Hart ford are acting as general super visors of the rally. The 4-H Variety dairy club met at the home of the leader, Mrs. John Snyder uesday night at 8. A. Ambrose of the Moorman Mineral Co., showed movies show ing the difference in livestock in 1900 and in 1950. Attainment of a "1" rating will privilege -the participants to en ter competition in the state mu sic festival at Eugene May 5 and 6. Programs of the bands from the various schools will be held tomorrow at the auditorium of Ihe Ochoco grade school. Previously, the group had gone on record In favor of "fast time." Meeting at the PI.ne tavern, members also discussed the Bell Ringers campaign being spon sored by the division and Instruct ed the chamber manager to get a written reaction from eacn oi the merchants who participated In the program.
