What with col lecting taxes, settling neigh borhood squabbles, chasing hoss thieves, and hanging a few unreliable citizens, he was a busy man. Now- a-days with a thousand and one overlapping police de partments operating in a dozen different fields, the poor guy has a hard time keeping out of jail himself. Well, time works many changes as you will notice II you read the loilowing: OVER IN the Willamette Valley (Yes, ma'am, that's the place where it rains con siderable) we have a com plete garage business, with modern fireproof building and all equipment, priced at $27,500 that we can trade for a good ranch up this way. BY. CRACKY WE HAVE some thing out of the ordinary right here: a dandy forty - acre farm for rent. Yes, ma'am, it is all nice level land, all irrigated, has a very comfortable house with bath; barn, garage, chicken house, good fenc ing. This should go fast so you better hurry. MEBBE WE are all wet but we think this is a mighty nice property for the price of $6500, with $1000 down, bal ance $50 per month. It has ; 3 bedrooms, complete bath, living room, dining room kitchen, knotty pine inter ior, Venetian blinds, all on a 65 x 125 foqt lot. Ask Pat Ballew to tell you more about it. IF YOU ARE packing $2800 around in your pocket we can put you into a good business, where you will have living quarters and the subrentals just about i puts you in the clear. Ask 1 Mr. Ballew about it. WE HAVE a man who has one acre and a dandy 2 bed room, modern house lust out of Eugene (It has 1120 feet of floor .space and is finished in knotty pine) who will trade his $5000 equity on Bend property or a small farm. HERE WE go again about that brcoupe of ours (Yes, ma'am, it is an aryplane) a nice one too, but the poor thing is getting a little lonesome sitting around by itself it wants to fly. Now if you want to "get away from it all" you better see us right quick we are go ing to sell it. . WE SELL THE EARTH WILLIAM B. SHELLEY . 520 South 3rd Phone 1174J S10.000: 80 AC, 68 ac. irrigated. Dog's Life Held iood Example or Happiness By Gay Pauley ("til ed frau Staff CorraaiWDdent) New York ilP Frances Hart- uiok believes people would be happier if they led a dog's life. IU ss HartsooK, who lor tne last 12 years has been studying dog and human bcihavior, contends the Fidos of this world are happier and better adjusted than most ol their masters. The dogs have a ' philosophy of living which hu mans might well follow, she said. Fido lives each moment. He doesn't worry about the dog house shortage or where the next bone is coming from. Miss Hartsook admitted that humans hardly can go that far In patterning after a dog's life. But she said they could stop worrying about things which 99 times out of 100 never happen anyway. Obedience Taugtit Admittedly, she said, this secur ity for dogs doesn't apply to all mutts. A few strays have to be taken care of by the welfare state the city dog pound and the A.S.P.C.A. She spoke about the dogs she meets in her daily job. Miss Hartsook is director of the Flag Dog Training school In Man hattan. Most of the dogs she trains come from the "upper classes." Obedience training Is given both to the dogs and their owners. "With the owner In command," she explained, "he sees things from a dog's point of view. He becomes adjusted to the dog and knows what the animal Is capable of In the way of obedience." The veteran trainer is opposed to boarding schools for dogs. Un der such a training system, she contends, the dog learns strict obedience to his Instructor but can be a little hellion as far as his master is concerned. Dogs Can Tell "Dogs can size up the perpon giving a command," she said. ""If he knows he's dealing wit'i a softie, well, he acts accordingly." She sa d the argument 01 whether to spank or not to spunk has to be settled by the doer's personality. If he's going to lent good behavior only by strict dis cipline, see that he gets it. The dog trainer has little n tience with the owner who indulg es every whim of his pet. All the owner is doing is "cre ating a problem child" se "id. "He's bringing up a spoiled b';t which won't be able to adju.t to society." At her training school, Cms learn princely manners vueV-r they're indoors or out. Th""'ve trained to be good mixers. wbet' er with other dogs or peonln, to stroll in crowds or traffic, to fetch, carry or retrieve lost frti cles, and to stay put or come when called. "SI'U'k Lead" Ailvlr.'-I They learn to walk wito'-t a leash, or with a slaak lead If t"-ev leash, or with a slack lead if they one phase of training Miss Hart sook Is especially emphatic about. She's seen untrained dors liter ally dragging their masters down the street, sometimes into traffic. One of her favorite customrrs was the woman who owned a Great Dane. She brought the out-sied pet to the training school, pleading that "I love that dog but can't you teach him some manners?" She pointed to skinned shins and a banged up nose to show ' what she meant.
