Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, widow
of the 32nd president, was among
the speakers at opening ceremo

building a few hundred yards
from the Roosevelt Hyde Park
home. Today is the 45th anniver
sary of their marriage.
Mr. Roosevelt was the first
American president to leave his
presidential and personal papers
to the nation. Never liefore have
a president's' private files been
opened for publication so soon
after his death. Even the papers
of John and Quincy Adams are
available today only with the per
mission ol tneir descendants.

living under the horrors of com
munist torture and terror," Presi-
dent Truman said in a message
read at tne ceremony Dy jess Lar

administration, "this action we'
are taking is a simple indication

tation of one of the most momen
tous periods in American history.

to augment this collection; I trust

standing of these years."
The papers of the late Harry
Hopkins, the late John Winant,
and Henry Morgenthau already
have been deposited with the li
brary. Other public figures have
promised their official papers, but
library officials said they would
have to make such announce
ments themselves.
