Plane Hits (Continued from Page 1) pattern," officials said. The control tower ordered him to swing around for another pass at the field. As he pulled up for a new try, the plane's wing struck the flag pole. The 80-foot pole tore two-thirds of the way through trie wing be tween the outboard engine and the wing tip. The pole was bent almost double. Chief inspector Dal Benham of Northwest Airlines said Jones no tified the Wold-Chamberlain air port of the accident and they or dered him to glide into the field immediately. Jones answered: "I can',, I can't. I'm falling. I'm going down." The Martin 202 airliner, almost completely out of control, swung in a vast 10-mile arc from a northwest to southerly direction with Jones fighting for altitude. Wing Disintegrates Meanwhile, the rushing air tore at the damaged wing until it dis integrated near the Washburn park water tower. A few sec onds later, the plane crashed into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Doughty and exploded. The house is four miles from the airport. The Doughty's two children, Tommy, 8, and Janet, 10, died in their cribs. A neighbor, John Leighton, found their mother ly ing in the snow outside the flam ing house. She was bleeding from arm and head cuts. "My babies, my babies," she screamed. "Save them. Save them. I had just kissed them good night when it happened. They can't be gone. It was too late. Leighton said "flames were shooting from every window in the house." Mrs. Doughty's husband saVed their eldest daughter, Diane, 15, as their home went up in flames. Neighbors rushed the three sur vivors to a hospital where they were treated for shock, cuts and burns. Twelve fire companies answered the alarm and at least two fire men were" injured. One fell off a ladder and another was hit by falling debris. . From Washington The plane had flown from Washington, stopping at Pitts burgh, Cleveland, Detroit, and Madison, Wis. A stop at Roch ester, Minn., had been cancelled due to the bad weather and the plane had been scheduled to wait here fori clearing skies before proceeding to Fargo and Grand Forks, N. D., and Winnipeg. The other two crew members who died with Jones were co pilot William McGinn of St. Paul and stewardess Mary Alice Ken nedy ot St. Paul. Miss Kennedy was engaged to be married .next month. Her sweetheart, William Stout, 25, of Minneapolis, rushed to the crash scene and made a hysteri cal attempt to break through po lice lines in an attempt to enter the flaming house. When police kindly turned him away, he wandered into the crowd, apparently in a state of shock. WII.IJAM FNAVIOR I GO 66-72-78 C Administrator Early -Day Resident Honored i?yf V v' - Thomas Patrick Murphy, who came to central Oregon in 1910, had a "surprise party" yesterday at Sunset home on his 84th birth day anniversary. He is recovering from pneumonia, but expects to be up and around before long. Murphy's visitors yesterday included J. D. Donovan, superintendent of Lumberman's hospital, who pre sented him a birthday cake, with a card from members of the hospital staff. Mrs. Bill Heath, cook at the hospital, baked the cake. Murphy enjoys visits from his long-time friends, who join him in reminiscing about early days in central Oregon. He was foreman of construction work on the old Tumalo irrigation project and, in 1912, was Bend chief of police. A native of Minnesota, he was em ployed there by The Shevlin-Hixon Company, and later by the same organization in Bend, as a pond foreman. He served as bailiff of Deschutes county court for several years, and has been active in the Elks lodge. Woman Named J As Communist; Hearing Opens Washington, March 8 tt" Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, R., Wis., testified today that a U. S. wom an representative, to the United Nations has been affiliated with 28 communist front organizations. McCarthy, first witness before a senate foreign relations sub committee investigating his charges of communists in the state department, identified the woman as Dorothy Kenyon. He also promised to discuss later what he described as U. S. ambassador-at-large Philip Jes sup's "unusual affinity ... for communist causes." McCarthy said the "communist activities of Miss Kenyon are not only deep rooted but extended back through the years. Miss Kenyon received a salary of $12,000 a year from the state department while she represented the united States on the uin com mission. Listed In Registry He said she is listed in the gov ernment registry as U. S. mem ber of the commission on the status of women and of the UN commissioners of the economic and social council. (The congressional director lists a Dorothy Kenyon of 433 West 21st street, New York City, as holding these positions. State department records show that Miss Kenyon, a former judge, was replaced by Mrs. Olive Gold man when her three-year term expired last Jan. 1.) The hearing began with a heated verbal battle. Chairman Millard E. Tydings, D., Md., chal lenged McCarthy to bring formal charges against a "high-ranking" state department officer who, Mc Carthy said, tampered with per sonnel records to shield a "flag rant homosexual" from discharge. McCarthy had made the charges Ln a senate speech. After a 40-minute argument, the dispute was resolved when Tydings asked McCarthy to tell the sub-committee at the next hearing whether the "high state department official is to be made the subject of a special case" and can be identified at a closed ses sion. McCarthy has charged that there are at least 57 communists on the state department's pay roll. The hearing recessed until 10:30 a. m. tomorrow before Mc Carthy completed his statement on Miss Kenyon. He said it would be completed tomorrow. Tydings told reporters that the question of continuing with open session rests with McCarthy. But said he is inclined to leave the question of open or closed ses sion up to the committee.
