MISTER MAN
IF YOU NEED a new apprecia
tion of this Oregon country
just spend a few days in
Southern California breath
ing that "concentrated"
sunshine they have down
there. Yes, ma'am, it is so
thick they have to turn on
their lights. We told the
Long Beach real estate
board breakfast group that
our sunshine was not near
so thick as theirs and they
accused us of being an em
misary of the Bend Cham
ber of Commerce Heaven
forbid.
BY THE WAY: We have a very
nice -2 - bedroom modem
house in Park Rose district
Portland, with basement
furnace, fireplace, lovely
shaded yard and lawn, that
the owner would like to
exchange his $2000 equity
as down payment on Bend
home. Full price $7000, and
worth every thin dime of
it.
IF YOU ARE a lover of nice
things you will go for this
lovely 2 bedroom modern
home at $7000. And If you
have good reference we will
let you pay cash for It. This
house has panel ray heat,
small finished basement
attached garage, and all
floor coverings are includ
ed. Ask Pat Ballew to tell
you more about it.
THIS ONE will cost you a thou
sand less but lias one more
bedroom. Yes, ma'am, three
bedrooms plus a nice living
room, large kitchen, bath,
utility, small basement,
large garage, wired for
range; all for $6000. with
terms in part. Mr. Ballew
has this one in tow also.
RIGHT HERE we offer one of
the cleanest little sporting
goods shops in all Central
Oregon, at a price that will
make your mouth water.
We are not going to tell
you much about it in this
ad, but if you will give us
a ring or call at the office,
we will be happy to an
swer all your questions.

Russians May
Have Head Start
On H-Bomb
London, March 2 del Russia
may have gained a head start
over the United States on hydro
gen bomb research through Infor
mation furnished by Dr. Klaus
Fuchs, atomic scientists said today.
They pointed out that Fuchs
was known to have been work
ing on hydrogen bomb theory at
the time he was meeting with
Russian agents. He was then the
third leading atomic scientist in
Britain and head of the theoreti
cal research department at the
Harwell atomic center.
During his last major contact
with Russian spies early last year
he was believed to have advised
soviet agents that the United
States and Britain were convinced
a hydrogen bomb could be made.
Information (Provided
At that time, scientists said,
Fuchs undoubtedly gave the Rus
sians the results of his own pre
liminary work on the hydrogen
bomb and its vast destructive potentialities.
President Truman did not an
nounce the American decision to
go ahead with production of a
hydrogen bomb until early this
year, although preliminary work
had been going on for some time.
With some of the secrecy re
moved from th case as a result
of Fuchs' trial yestreday, Inform
ed quarters disclosed that Fuchs
was trapped through a single
word In a Russian agent's note
book found in Canada last year.
The notebook contained Fuchs'
name followed by the Russian
word "nash" meaning "ours."
This set off a full-scale Inves
tigation which disclosed that the
German-born British scientist
had been revealing atomic secrets
to Russia since 1942.

board, and Bronson Burdick, .
clerk,, indicated that the school
district has been unable to agree
with the owners on the price
of the property. The land sought
to be condemned Is a plot 100 teet
by 300 feet about one-tourth of
a mile west of Camp Sherman.
The boundary board offered
slightly in excess of $500 for the
property, but district directors
said the offer was refused.
Morgret, contract purchaser,
said he had paid approximaiely
$2,000 an acre for 19 acres, and
did not feel he should sell it for
less, the directors said. Haglund,
the record owner of the property,
was reluctant to sell at this price
unless all ol the money paid by
the district was applied on re
duction of the contract.
School authorities say the land
they seek is not the more valu
able land In the tract owned by
Haglund and Morgret, "but ' is
waste land lying one-quarter of a
inile'fiom the ivlelolius river and
is of no particular value for
summer home sites."
