Market New York, Feb. 25 (ID Stocks moved irregularly on the New York stock exchange today in quiet trading. There was nothing In the news to Influence the market, but in vestors did display a consider able amount of caution because of the protracted soft coal strike. They elected to hold off making any further commitments over the week end and trading for a Saturday trading session was the quietest in more than a month. The. final results of the British eleclftm. apparently had no effect oh the security market here.-The London stock market is closed on Saturdays. Price changes throughout (he main stock list were small either way. However, a few individual stocks met considerable amount of pressure as a result of divi dend omissions. In particular, Chesapeake & Ohio fell a major fraction in active trading. Yes terday, directors of C &. O passed a dividend. Packard Motor also slipped because of a dividend omission. Elsewhere. Allied Chemical was responsible for bringing up Indus trial average to show a slight gain on the day. Price changes in the Industrial group were very small. Utilities moved in a nar row range and railroad issues slipped slightly, i A number ot low-priced steel stocks met demand just before the close. Granite City Steel, which was involved in a rumor of a possible merger with a larger producer, later denied by the company, had a gain of a point to 33'f. Follanshee and Eastern Stainless Steel had gains ranging lo a point. These stocks arc not Included In the industrial aver age. Steele (United Praia Stuff CorraaiKinitent) Washington, Feb. 25 lPiRe. publicans hailed the election gains of British conservatives as a happy omen today, but Demo crats said they don't mean a thing so far as American politics go. . Experts of both U. S. political parties studied the slim labor par ty margin of victory for clues on trends which might Influence the fall congressional campaign here. Republicans, who liken the Tru man program to Socialist exper iments of the labor government in Britain, claimed "the tide is turning." Chairman Robert A. Taft, O., of the senate republican policy committee said the results in Bri tain showed "a world-wide turn against socialism." GOP national chairman Guy George Gabrielson said tory gains were "most en couraging . . . the tide is turning against the socialist state." Democrats Dissent But Democrats loudly dissent ed. Senate majority leader Scott W. Lucas. 111., said the British results would have "absolutely no bearing" on the fall campaigns here or on Mr. Truman's program in congress. Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey, D., Minn., a spokesman for the more leftist wing of the president's par ty, told republicans they would regard conservative leader Win ston Churchill as a "dangerous U. S. Still Seeks To Keep Planes Away From Reds Washington, Feb. 25 tlP The United States has asked Great Britain to use civil air regula tions to keep Chinese commu nists from flying away with 71 disputed transport planes now at Hong Kong, it was reported to-. day. The British court at Hong Kong has dissolved an Injunction that had kept the communists rom seizing the planes, which are claimed by U. S. airman Claire L. Chcnnault. Communists now plan to fly the planes to Pelplng within a week. The United States, however, was reported to have suggested that Great Biitalni simply refuse to giye.the planes ftecessarj!civil lan registration papers. 'Tills would prevent their taking off from the Hong Kong airport. The American suggestion was said to have been made in the course of the latest U. S. maneu vers in the case. Secretary of state Dean Acheson disclosed yes terday that he has sent vigorous representations to both the Brit ish government and Hong Kong officials. U. S. Dissatisfied The state department, it was disclosed, had several exchang es with the British on the sub ject lwfore the Hong Kong court came to its decision. Its officials kept the exchanges secret at the time because they did not want to be In the position of trying to Influence a court proceeding. The United States, however, made clear to the British that It was dissatisfied with the trend of affairs. ' The disputed trans port planes were owned by two air transport corporations which the Chinese nationalist govern ment controlled. When the nationalists fled to Formosa, the air crews went over to the communists. Chennault, however, claimed that he has bought the pianos from the na tionalists and, as an American, had the right to keep them. The I long Kong court at the time ordered the planes kept at Hong Kong until their ownership was settled. Hong Kong author ities also revoked the planes re gistration. They cannot leave Hong Kong, officials hero be lieve, until the director of civil aviation there renews this regis tration. American officials hope that If the British accept their sugges tion and deny the communists the necessary clearance, the planes can be Kept under western con trol.
