Science at Work
By Paul F. Ellin
(Uniu-4 I'rua Science aUlitor)
New York mi Doctors In the
small towns, specialists in the
big cities and even the young
interne in the hospital accident
wai-.lj have their professional
ryes turned toward Manchester,
N. H.
In that picturesque New Eng-
!n(i town, one of their proles-
nim is on trial for murder be-
'aus? he deliberately put to death
i woman who was already dying
cf mneer.
L iseussions with doctors have
shown there is a tremendous
amount of Interest in the fate
of Dr. Herman Sander, the doc
tor who injected 40 centimeters
of air into the veins of his pa
tient, causing her death.
While there is a great deal of
sympathy for Dr. Sander, the be
lief is rather general that he
broke his Hippocratic oath. Such
an oath is taken by every doctor
as he receives his degree.
It pledges him to do his best
for the patient at all times, and
to protect the privacy of patient
doctor relationship, and places
him under a high code of ethics.
The oath goes back to Hippo
crates, known as the father of
medicine. In recent years the
oath was rewritten somewhat to
pledge doctors against inhuman
treatment of patients, such as the
Nazi doctors gave anti-Hitler Ger
mans before and during the last
war.
However, many cancer doctors
have admitted privately that they
have given overdoses of mor
phine or other pain-killing drugs
to patients who had but a few
hours to live.
The doctors point out that can-
cer, once it is in the last stages,
is a sure killer and few if any
cases have been reported wherein
a patient made a death-bed stand
against the disease and then re
covered. J
As a result, .the patient Is put
into a coma deliberately, the doc
tors say, and it is in a coma
from which they know the pa
tient will not recover.
Some medical men sav there
Isn't much difference between
giving a person an overdose of
morpiiine and giving him a "thal
dose effect, but morphine is re
garded as a tnerapeutic agent,
while air is not.
Research men have used Injec
tions of air to kill laboratory a"t
mnls. The smallest amount in
some cases win kill a mouse,
they point out.
An injection or air causer, n'r
bubbles in the blood stream and
they reach the heart in a p.r
of a lew seconds, such is cnii-i
an air embolus, and It dnrmges
the heart, causing It to draw en.
The blood in the heart, the doc-,
tors say, takes on a pinkish e-'"-,
antl an autopsy would show Im
mediately whether a person wn3
killed bv air inte'loi.
rhe sandnr trial may n"f fi
ckle Hie issue whether mercy
deaths should be permitted, fieirj
doctors who believe In the nr'i
clnle of mercy deaths still viuld
refrain from making them '"ral
In the fear that the legnltiod
mercy killing would be abused.
