Laird S. Goldsborough, 48, who
bossed confessed communist spy
courier Whittaker Chambers, had
no reason for Jumping to his
death from a Manhattan sky
scraper, his wife said today.
Goldsborough, a wartime coun
ter-spy and nephew of Federal
judge T. Alan Goldsborough of
Washington, u.u., piungea irom
his ninth floor office in Rocke
feller center lastn ight, striking
a passerby in his fall.
Mrs. Goldsborough said her
husband who became a free-lance
writer after leaving Time, never
was involved in the Alger Hiss
oeriurv trial at which Chambers,
his chief assistant when he was
Time foreign affairs editor, was
the key government witness.
She said his fall "must have
been an accident," but police
found two notes, one In his pock
et and the other, torn to shreds,
in the office wastebasket. The
notes requested that his wife and
brother-in-law, Charles W. . Mo-

After an afternoon of discis
sion the committee made the fo'

county could be Increased only
through some possible small In
crease in range land carrying ca
nacltv. through burning arid land

gated pastures; an increase in
farm flocks of sheep. The con
clusion was reached that swine
production can be Increased only
hv utilizing bv-products such as
skim milk and cull potatoes, and
that there is a c.ed for more in
formation regarding the use of
these products for feed. It was
also recommended that there be
research work done in determin
ing the possibilities of such feeds
as clover straw for fattening live
stock. Llndgren will report to the col
lege any possibilities for lending
aid to the Deschutes county pro

Mrs. Gene Grover is slowly Im
proving at the family home here,
following a recent illness.
Percy Wick of Bowman, N.D.,
was a guest of his brother, Lester
Wick, and family the. past week.
At a recent meeting of the
young people of the Alfalfa Sun
day school, officers were elected
as follows: Richard Davison,
president; Mary Llvesly, vice
president, and Yvonne Wallace,
secretary-treasurer.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Miller and
daughter were dinner guests Sun
day at the Robert Alley home at
Tumalo.
The church group of this com
munity met at the Scribner home
Friday evening for Bible study
and song service. Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Westlake and son, and a
large number of the young peo
ple of the Presbyterian church
of Bend accompanied Rev. Robert
Nicholas here. After the social
hour refreshments were served.
Phil Scribner returned to work
Sunday after a week's lay-off.
He is employed at the Dam &
Barclay sawmill on North Agency
plains.
Lerora Kay Poffenbarger, six-
weeks-old granddaughter of Mrs.
Frank Allen, Is 111 with whooping
cough.

discussion of plans for the district
speech contest and joined in a
program of table topics and short
addresses. Principal speakers and
their subjects were Gail Baker,
"Special Days"; Ralph W. Craw
ford, "American Literature," and
Clarence Bush, "Area Speech Con
test." Max Millsap presided, with
Bob Thomas as toastmaster.
Nominated to serve as officers
in the coming year were Max
Millsap, president; Gifford
Briees, vice-president; George
Simervllle, secretary - treasurer;
Harry Drew, sergeant at arms
and Dr. Bradford N. Pease, depu
ty governor. Dr. Pease is retiring
president of the club.
Plans for the district speech
contest, with Redmond, Madras
and Bend taking part, will be
made later In the week.

Holds Meeting
Redmond, Feb. 15 Mrs. Alda
McMickle, local regent of the
Daughters of the American Rev
olution, led a discussion on world
government at a D.A.R. meeting
Monday afternoon at the home of
Mrs. J. R. Roberts. A report was
made on hides that had been col
lected locally and sent to the Ce
lilo Indians in January.
It was announced that the In
dians are badly in need of cloth
ing and organizations interested
in sending clothing to the Indiana
should contact Mrs. McMickle.
Delegates elected to attend the
state conference are Mrs. Mc
Mickle, Mrs. J. R. Roberts, Mrs.
G. A. Edwards, Mrs. R. N. Elliott
and Mrs. Frank McDonald. State
officers will be elected at the con
ference which will be held in Cor
vallls March 26.
The next meeting of the local
group will be on March 13'at the
home of Mrs, Dean Van Matre.

MAN DIES IN FIRE
Florence. Feb. 15 U William
Reaves, about 70, was killed last
night when a flash fire gutted his
Westlake home.
Neighbor Bill Grenbremer said
he could not rescue the victim be
cause of the flames. Cause of the
fire was not known.
