LP A 40-mile strip of snow-white sands in the Gulf of Mexico is being developed as an island paradise. It is in tended to lure more tourists to Florida's unexploited gulf coast. However, part of the develop ment has bogged down In discus sions over a little two-and-one-half-mile stretch of the island. Santa Rosa island extends from Destin to Pensacola, Fla., and ownership is split between the federal government and Escambia and Okaloosa counties' in Flor ida. Okaloosa county, with few in rorwrnjdur.'.nqr industries, passed up a chance to get part of the island 20 years ago when the west Florida gulf coast was a remote area, virtually uninhabited. Today the island strip is valu able. Legislation Put Through Rep. Robert Sikes of Florida steered through federal legisla tion recently which makes 18 miles of the island part of Oka loosa county. But so far just three miles has been releas ed from federal control. The enabling act provides that the county cannot sell the land, but can lease three miles of the island for "public recreational purposes." Tom Brooks, Fort Walton, Fla., representing the Island Amuse ment Co., has asked for a 99-year lease on the small stretch of is land. He offered $l,00u a year for five years, and five per cent of the gross income from the Island thereafter. Brooks also said he would pay whatever price Is set by the U. S. engineers department, which Is surveying the property. Eight Miles Leased Brooks already has a lease on eight miles of the island west ward from Destin. The lease ex pires in 1954. The amusement company now owns 38 cottages, a boardwalk and concession space on this strip. State legislation sets aside a half-mile of the three-mile strip released from federal control for a public park site for Fort Wal ton. Escambia counjy has establish ed a Santa Rosa Island Author ity to develop its part of the island. Mrs. Gates, 69, said a car driven by Blrdsong's wife collided with her automobile while she was driving to Davidson, Okla., to meet a man who wanted to marry her.
