Phone 1 1100-R. Plot to Seize Berlin Slated For Resistance By John B. McDermott (United Freai Surf Correapondent) Berlin, Feb. 10 UP) U.S. high commissioner J o h n J. McCloy said today that the communists would be blocked in their threat ened attempt to take west Berlin by storm. He also promised that counter- measures would be taken against the on-and-off Russian blockade of Berlin traffic on the super highway at Helmstedt, where 150 trucks going in both directions were piled up by mid-morning. Responding to questions at a crowded press conference at the high commissioners headquar ters here, McCloy said: I do not know what Is in the minds of the communists but they definitely will not seize Ber lin.- The communists had announc ed plans for assembling 500,000 youths m Berlin from May 27 to May 30 for a world youth con gress. The German communist youth magazine, Young World, reported they planned to take west Berlin "by storm." , Blockade Continues McCloy, who arrived in Berlin by rail this morning from his Frankfurt headquarters to con fer with American Berlin com mandant Maj. Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor, made his statement amid reports the Russians already had backed down on plans to seize west Berlin with the aid of Ger man communist police. Charles Dix, United' States transport chief, said there were 70 Berlin-bound trucks and 80 west-bound trucks waiting for clearance at Helmstedt. Last night the backlog was only 40 trucks. Informed sources said McCloy and Taylor will discuss the full Berlin situation, including the baby blockade and the plans of th communist vmith mnvpmpnt to hold a demonstration of 500,- 000 members here May 27-30. Allied intelligence officers said that Russia has vetoed an order to the east Berlin communist po lice to take over the western sec tors of Berlin during Sunday, May 28, at the height of the plan ned rally. The officers said they had re ceived reports the Soviets con sider the plan too risky because It almost inevitably would lead to violent .clashes involving allied and red army troops.
