However, under such an arrangement, no seats would be provided. Spectators, as in earlier years, would view the fete from Drake park, or from west side or downstream lawns. Seats Too Expensive Pageant officials indicated that the cost of providing seats Is pro hibitive, inasmuch as a federal tax must be paid, queen candi dates get a "split" for selling tick ets and tradesmen are paid for erecting tne seats. Jn the past seat tickets have been sold for $1.25 each. Another proposal made was that only 1,000 seats be erected and that these be sold for $5.00 each. Directors of the pageant asso ciation were pledged full support by various organizations. Hugh Cole pledged this support on be half of the A.F. of L. and Earl Rodman on behalf of the C.I.O. LeRoy Fox said the Kiwanians had Instructed hirruto say the club was backing the river show, and Bert Hagen voiced a similar mes sage from the Jaycees. Shackford - (United Press Staff Corresiionilent) London, Feb. 7 tut British con servatives gave the first hint to day that conservative leader Win ston Churchill may make some spectacular gesture in the field of foreign affairs before the Feb. 23 election. The hint was put forward in a speech by Anthony Eden, second man in the conservative party and Churchills wartime foreign minister, when he opened the con servative radio campaign last night. Eden promised Britain the eon servatives would devote ail their strength and experience-to restor ing the fundamentals of friend ship between nations whatever their political color." Eden prefaced his remarks on foreign affairs by stating that "the threat of the hydrogen bomb is before us as an awful warn ing." i The labor government has re jected suggestions that a new ap proach to soviet premier Josef Stalin might be profitable in view of the hydrogen bomb. The conservatives have been silent on this issue, although the conservative press has deplored the labor government's refusal to entertain such an idea. Sharp Contrast Seen Eden's offer to try to work things out with any nation was in sharp contrast to Prime minis ter Clement Attlee's recent state ment that a new approach to Stalin on the atomic bomb would be worthless. Attlee said it probably would do more harm than good by raising "unduly the hopes for peace which have been so cruelly disap pointed in the past. That has been quite the oppo site of public opinion as expressed in the British press. Nearly every daily and Aveekly newspaper has urged that in view ot tne nyctro- gen bomb a new ettort De maae to reach an agreement. Some political quarters pointed out that Churchill's major vote cettinir personality is in the for eign rather than the domestic field. They predicted that a promise by Churchill to make a new ap proach to statin mignt De a spec tacular last-minute vote-getting maneuver. PROSPERITY NOTE You'd yip too and wave a signed con tract in the air if it called for the $45,000 Tom Henrich will be paid by the Yankees this season. (Continued from Page 1) New York Stocks Show Decline New York, Feb. 7 (tPi Stocks registered a technical decline in reduced trading today. Profit-taking started at an ir regular Opening and continued through most of the session. To ward closing time, it appeared to have run its course, and prices came back from their lows. Market experts said the Gen eral Motors dividend of $1.50 a share, largest first quarter on the current stock, had been dis counted in advance and that its announcement after the close yesterday set off profit-taking. The stock at its low was off point. It rallied substantially. Studebaker registered a new high on anticipation of favorable dividend- action. Chrysler, still under the influence of a strike, receded. All major sections of the mar ket joined the decline and at the lows the market showed its widest decline since Jan. 25. Ac tivity continued to center on top ranking issues such as U. S. Steel, General Motors, Studebak er, and Radio Corp. Trades continued to ferret out special situations throughout the list and some of these rose as much as a point to new highs for more than a year. An extra dividend attracted at tention to Sheaffer Pen and the issue was bid up several points to a new high. Goodrich and Grumman Aircraft made new tops in their respective sections International Shoe was depress ed sharply on a drop of 44 per cent in its earnings for 1949 com pared with 1948. Several leaders, including Allied Chemical, Amer ada, Santa Fe, and Mission Corp., lost a point or more. Addresso-graph-Multigraph continued pop ular in the office equipment issues. OFFER MADE ASHLAND Ashland, Feb. 7 (Ui Council men have taken under advise ment an offer of the California Oregon Power company to pur chase the electrical distribution system of the city of Ashland. The offer was presented by John C. Boyle, general manager of the company. He explained that the company did not con template buying the city's gen erating plant, but only to distrib ute electric power to individual customers. The company, under the pro posal, would buy energy from the Ashland power plant and supplement with power provided by its own facilities. Savants to Study Life-Span Problem Berkeley, Calif. WiUnlversity of California's institute of Indus trial relations plans a five-year stuuy inio me impact on Amer ica of an aging population. Supported by a Rockefeller Foundation pledge of $125,000, the research project will have the assistance of faculty members of the various university departments. ' Vacancy Filled One vacancy on the board of supervisors was filled at the an nual meeting, with Jack Shum way, of Powell Butte, named to take the place of John Hansen, Terrebonne, whose term expired. Shumway won from Sherwood Nicholas of the Plainview commu nity by a one-vote margin. Under the new set up, elected members of the five-man hoard are Shum way, B. L. Fleck and T. J. Hughes. Appointed members are Elliott and William Horsell. The south ern and western part of Des chutes county that was incorpo rated in the county-wide district as a result of the SCS vote last week is still without representa tion on the board, but it was indi cated that when assistant super visors are named the new area will be extended full recognition. Succeeding Hansen, Shumway was named treasurer of the board at yesterday's meeting. Jim El ings, Deschutes county agent, is secretary. Rotation Approved Members attending yesterday's meeting in Redmond favored a ro tation of monthly meetings through the county. Approving this policy, the board of supervis ors of the enlarged district set the next meeting for the Plainview grange hall, on the Bend-Sisters road, on February 20. This will be an evening meeting. Later in the year monthly meetings will be held at the Pine Forest grange hall and at the Eastern Star grange hall. Part of the annual meeting was' devoted to a review of technical services available for land owners in the district. One of the speak ers was Joseph B. Rogers, Bend, district conservationist for the U. S. department of agriculture. His headquarters are in the basement of the Pilot Butte inn. Directly following the annual district meeting, Wood left by plane for his headquarters in Den ver. He had attended a series of SCS meetings in Oregon.
