Barbara Hin- Local Women 1 Congo Missionary r tanning I rip 6 Christian Churches to Join In Rally Tomorrow in Bend rowtm Butte, bisters and Bend will join in a-"fifth Sunday rally tomorrow at First Christian church in Bend, with Miss Gertrude Shoemaker, evangelist and teacher-missionary in the Belgian Congo, to be guest speaker at afternoon and eve ning sessions. The Rally will start at 3 p.m. with a song service led by George Knox, Sisters, followed by a business meeting with Jess Smalley, Sisters, presid- mg. Fishback, pastor of the host church, said that all, members of the participating churches and their friends will be welcome to attend. Miss Shoemaker is stationed at Mondombe in the Belgian Congo, 1,500 miles from the mouth of the Congo river. Because the area is so far inland, conditions are more primitive than in some other sec lions of the Congo. Roads now be ing built by the state connect Mondombe with Stanleyville to the east, and with many of the outlying villages and rubber and palm oil plantations. Transporta tion is rapidly being converted from river boats and native can oes to modern trucks and station wagons. Mission Work Described At the Mondombe station school, offering third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades, 275 boys and girls ave enrolled, and those from the villages are eared for in dormi tories. In the outlying villages, wherever a teacher or preacher teacher is located, a primary school is conducted offering first and second grades. Miss Shoemaker will spend this year in the United States on fur lough, her first since 1944-45. She will also be speaker at the 11 a.m. service tomorrow at the church, when Woman's day' will be observed. Mrs. Frances Juris of Prineville, dis trict auxiliary president, paid an official visit to the group which met at the Redmond grange hall. In behalf of the Americanism committee, Mrs. Robert Tull re ported that an essay contest will be sponsored by the group, and the high school has expressed its willingness to participate. Title of the essay is to be "U. S. Spells Us." Judges for the contest will be announced later. The auxiliary president, Mrs. Wilma Taylor, announced thai the nominating committee is com posed of Mrs. Ray Rogers, Mrs. Wade Short, Mrs. Charles Dudley, Mrs. P. M. Houk and Mrs. Jess Tetherow. Beside the district president. 34 members attended the meeting. The joint social evening was socnt in square dancing, with George Hubbell and Mrs. Harry Sly acting as callers. The next auxiliary meeting will be the afternoon of February 9 at the home of Mrs. R. F. Jones. JKs. Leaders meeting Tuesday at the Redmond grange hall will include those from the Deschutes, Redmond. Brooks-Scanlon, Lower Bridge, North Unit, Tumalo, Ter rebonne, Northwest Redmond and Cloverdale units. Meeting Wednesday, Feb. 1, will be the following units: Des chutes, 10:30 a m., with Mrs. Eu gene Davis; Alfalfa, 7:30 p.m., with Mrs. John Ovens, and Lapine, 10:30 a.m., with Mrs. Darrel Stole berg. The Eastern Star unit will meet next Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the home of Mrs. H. S. Har bour, and the Carroll Acres unit will meet next Friday at 1:30 p.m., at the home of Mrs. Claude Wan ichek. Shower Is Given At Redmond Home Redmond, Jan. 23 -Mrs. Donald Iverson was honored at a pink and blue shower given Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Floyd Watson, with Miss Lois Hammond as co-hostess. The table centerpiece featured a life-size baby doll surrounded by pink and blue nut cups. A stork hovered over the daintily wraoped gifts arranged on the buffet. A bouquet of blue iris with pink snapdragons carried out the color scheme. The group participated in sev eral games, with Mrs. Vera Hass ler, Mrs. Byrl King and the hon oree winning prizes. The women were local fi nalists in the "Queen of Ameri ca" contest, and Mrs. Perrine was named local queen. Mrs. B. C.
