Mr. and Mrs. Phil Carlson and

The 4-H Garden club mit at
the home of its president, Sidney

cided to call themselves the Car
den Gophers. Six members and
Mrs. Ira Carter as a guest were
present when each member made
a report on insect control. The
next meeting win be a. Valentine
party February 11 and each mem
ber is to make a report on some
vegetable. The place of meeting
Will be announced later.
Word has been received here of
tne death of John Hazen In Cali
fornia last Sunday after a very
short Illness. He was a son-in-law
or Mr. and Mrs. Paul Splllman.
No particulars have been learned
at this time.
Michael Penhollow was ' a Sun
, day dinner guest at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Myron Blackwell
and son, Robert. They all attend
ed the singing at the Baptist
church In Redmond by the "Four
Flats."
Mr. and Mrs. Luke Relf were
Sunday dinner guests at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Naff
of Redmond. Then all attended
the concert by the "Four Flats."
Members of the local grange
plan to go to Lookout mountain
Friday evening and. exemplify
the third and fourth degrees.
Ted Marshall accompanied by
Mr. and Mrs. George Higgins and
son of Springfield returned to
the valley Thursday. The Hlg
'gins had been visiting his sister,
Mrs. Marshall and family since
Saturday.

tained at dinner last Sundav eve
ning honoring their daughter-in-law,
Mrs. Glenn RItter, on her
blrthdav anniversary. Guests In
cluded Mr. and Mrs. Glenn RItter
and daughter, Glenda of Powell
Butte' and Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Dietz, daughter, Roberta, and
Mrs. Rose Solomon of Redmond.

day. Mrs. Vice spent the dav at

Lois Ann Bussett spent Friday
and Saturday with her grand
mother, Mrs. E. A. Bussett, in
Redmond where she had dental
work done. Mr. and Mrs. Bussett
and family went to Redmond
Sunday and brought their (laugh
ter home.
Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Sleas
man. Carol Nolan of Metolius,
Mr. and Mrs. Phil Carlson and
family, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mor
rison and son, Perry, and Gary
Havnes were Sundav dinner
guests at tne home of Mr. ana
Mrs. Harry Carlson and family.
The local school was dismissed
immediately after lunch Tuesday
due to the storm and blizzard and
remained closed during Wednes
day until snow, plows could open
the side roads! It was reopened
on' Thursday morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Buck McArdle of
Bend spent Sunday with her sis
ter, Mrs. Lynn Fischer and fam
ily. Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Nye and
children of Prlnevllle visited Sun
day afternoon at the home of

Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Fischer lost
their best young milk cow Sun
day when she slipped and fell in
a ditch on her back. The cow cow
was due to freshen in about a
week. '
The Fifth Sunday rally of cen
tral Oregon Christian churches
will be held next Sunday at Bend.

returned from a two month vaca
tion In Spokane where they visited
their daughters, Mrs. George Mo
rasch and Mrs.' John Kryns. While
here, they will be at home with
their daughter, Mrs. Jie parson.
Mrs. Ole Larson returned to her
home Thursday evening after
spending lour days at the nome
of her sister, Mrs. Everett Jones,
in Bena. (

Grange Hall
Grange Hall, Jan. 25 (Special)
Due to weather conditions in the
community last week, all meet
ings of the 4-H clubs, grange,
etc., were cancelled. All the main
roads are now clear and meet
ings planned for this wpek will
be held. The Eastern Star Juve
nile grange will meet on Satur
day at the hall at 2 p.m. The
Grange Hall Ladies aid will meet
on Thursday at the home of Mrs.
Curtis Carlln at 1:30 p.m. The
Eastern Star Home Economics
club will meet at the home of
Mrs. Homer Brown at 431 New
port avenue In Bend on Wednes
day at 2 p.m., and the regular
grange meeting of the Eastern
Star granfee will be held at 8
o'clock on Tuesday evening. The
square dance classes scheduled
for Friday night for members of
the Eastern Star grange and their
families will be held on Friday
evening. : '
' Mr. and Mrs. Del Mattson and
Mr. and Mrs. Dave Carlin re
turned recently from an extended
vacation' In Arizona where they
visited relatives. ,
Ed Duffy and Lowell Franks
were released Sunday from the
St. Charles hospital, where they
have been patients for about a
week. Miss Marie Tapken was re
leased on Tluay and returned
to the home of her mother, Mrs.
Joe Conrad. Miss Tapken under
went surgery two weeks ago.
Dan Moore, son of Mr. and Mrs.
R. D. Moore, is recuperating from
an attack of scarlet fever.
Mrs. C. A. Burton and Mrs.
Walter Prlchard left Tuesday
morning with the 4-H club agent,
Donald L. Benscoter, to attend
the annual 4-H Leaders confer
ence in Corvallis on the Oregon
Slate college campus for two
days. Mrs. John Connelly is car
ing for the burton children dur
ing their mother's absence, and
Mrs. Prichard's mother, Mrs. Mar
lon Dubuis, is caring for her
grandchildren.
Mrs. Thomas Burton enter
tained Sunday evening In honor
of her daughter, Susan, and her
seventh birthday. Those present
were Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Burton
and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nelson,
Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Fitzgerald
were callers at the Harold Har
bour home last Monday evening,
The Sundown 4-H sewing club
will meet on Monday, January
30, after school at the home of
Mavis Rowley. Their meeting this
Monday was cancelled because of
the road conditions. The next
meeting of the Jolly Cooks will
be held on February 6.
Joe Bradetlch, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Roy Bradetlch, spent the
week end visiting his parents. Joe
is a student at Oregon State col
lege. .

son of Madras were Bend visitors
over the week end.

Redmond C. of C.
Declines to Act
Redmond, Jan. 25 At its meet
ing Tuesday noon the chamber of
commerce declined to act in an ad
visory capacity or to express an
opinion with regard to the federal
low-rent housing program. Sev
eral weeks ago the chamber had
recommended that the council ask
the county court to appoint a
housing commission. The council
in turn had requested the cham
ber to study the situation and to
advise the council.
A report was made for the ag
riculture committee In behalf of
Chairman Jim Filings, by Don
McKenzie. John Norlin made the
industrial committee report and
the retail merchants committee
report was made by Howard
achroeder. kach of these commit
tees is undertaking an intensive
survey In Its field.
Chamber members will assist
with serving the noon meql at the.
annual meeting of the Central
Oregon Cooperative creamery
which is scheduled for . Wednes
day, February 1. Frank Loggan
of Bend, manager of KBND. was
a guest at the Tuesday chamber
meeting.
