THURSDAY, JANUARY 19, 1950 A-t ItM THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON Bobby Feller's Pay Slashed By John Griffin . (United PrM Sport Writer) New York, Jan. 19 IP The biggest pay cut his bosses could possibly give him 520,000 left 31-year-old Bobby Feller In a grim mood today, determined "to regain my previous form." The former boy wonder's fast ball cooled off a lot last season, and so did the enthusiasm of the Cleveland Indians for giving him a huge salary. His 1949 contract for about $70,000 was trimmed to $50,000 for the coming cam : paign. That's still not peasant's pay, but it's a far cry from the $90,000 ' that Pullet Bobby earned when his "fast one" was mowing down the batters. The Indian bosses, who'' took over their job this winter by, buy ing out Bill Veeck, actually cut Feller's pay as much as they could. Under baseball law, no salary may be sliced more than 25 per cent, Feller's cut was : more than that, but the explana : tion is that his 1949 pay included College Girls Sfarf Own Business; Make Cosmetics By James W. Hurt (United Pretta Staff Corrsapondent) ' Pittsburgh U'i Chemistry ma jors at the Pennsylvania College for Women have gone into busi ness to help other students along the rocky road to success. The girls have formed a cos metics factory. They manufac ture, package and retail their own brand of bottled beauty and use tne proceeds to finance scholar ships for worthy junior chemistry majors. . The products sell under the name of "Charm" and include tnree kinds of face cream, hand bonuses this year the bonuses are out. "I feel tne club has treated me very fairly," said Bobby. He in dicated he would be ail out to im prove on his 1949 record when lie won 15 games, but lost 14, and failed for the first time in his career to strike out 100 batters in the season. He was the seventh Indian to sign up for '50, leaving General manager Hank Green berg with such headaches to look forward to as second baseman Joe Gordon and pitcher Bob Lemon. Tommy Henrich, the New York Yankees' outfielder-first baseman, will get paid about $47,000 In 1950, just a shade under. Feller. But for him it's a raise and he's happy. lotion and tooth powder. Hie tooth powder comes in live fla vors peppermint, spearmint, wintergrec-n, ciove and cinnamon. Students ol KC.W. have taken to their infant industry and sales run high because oi tne hign quality and low price of tne prod ucts. The main retail outlet for the cosmetics is a stand in one of the school's buildings, but a small mail-order service also is carried on. Bust Ingredient Only the highest grade ingredi ents are used in the manufacture of "Charm" products. The jars and bottles used in packaging are sterilized for more than an hour immediately before they are filled. Laboratory conditions- are rigor ously inspected and cleanliness is a by-word. The girls didn't enter the cos metics industry without running into the same pitfalls that greet any newcomer to a field. They've had more than their share of trouble, they feel. When they first started mak ing face creams, they discovered that glycerine, a basic ingredient, is none too pleasant to smell. Perfumes were too costly to allow a profit. After a little research, however, they finally found an in expensive rose-geranium synthet ic smell that filled the. bill. The 50-cent tooth pow, derhad to be flavored, of course. That seemed easy enough at first. But it turned out that every girl in the school had her own favorite flavor and couldn't understand why she couldn't get it in "Charm" tooth powder. Everybody Pleased So,' the manufacturers got to gether and decided to beat down competition from the outside by putting out the stuff in five flavors. When the budding young canned-beauty dispensers decided to enter the hand lotion field, they put out a frosty-colored goo that stuck up everything it touched and wouldn't soak into the skin. Furthermore, the customers com plained, it tended to separate into two distinct and unmixable lay ers if lett to stand for awhile In the bottle. One of the seniors fixed that by cutting the Elycerine content. She even made the stuff prettier by adding a soft pink vegetable coloring. - The girls who work in the la boratory making "Charm" prod ucts, as well as everyone else connected with handling the cos metics, donate their time. They feel that earning a scholarship for one of their fellow students is a remuneration enough for the long afternoons they give up.
