Results Northwest Hit (Continued from Page 1) cope with midnight skliers as well as stranded motorists. A number of Portlanders, taking advantage of the rarely seen deep snow, dis rupted traffic by skiing down hilly areas and dodging automo bile traffic. WARM IN EAST Chicago, Jan. 4 'tr1) Blizzards, tornadoes, floods and ice storms pounded the western three fourths of the nation today while the east basked in record break ing June in January tempera tures. Blizzards lashed the Dakotas, northern Minnesota and the Pa cific northwest, piling snow drifts in the Puget sound area and halt ing highway traffic in the north ern plains. Freezing -rain laid a 200-mile- wide carpet of ice across Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas between St. Louis, Mo., and Ft. Worth. Te. Tornadoes, striking in the wake of torrential rains, wrecked or damaged nearly 50 homes, and buildings in the Mississippi river bottomlands north of St. Louis. The Indian creek levee at Wan da, .111.,' gave way last night. The break occurred just a few hours after a baby twister hit St. Louis county and Madison and Mont gomery counties in Illinois. Ris ing waters threatened the Shell Oil company's refinery at Wood River, already damaged by the windstorm. About 250 volunteer workmen repaired the breaks by filling sandbags and dumping them into the levee break, wading through icy water as the temperature dropped steadily. Heavy rains that accompanied the tornado were blamed for the levee collapse. Eight homes, a church and school in the village of Wanda wore flooded and Illi nois highway 159 was under wa ter as 500 acres of land in Madi son county were inundated. Menu Varied .Typical of the wide assortment of wintry weather was that which pummelled Springfield, Mo., last night. At one time, the weather bureau there reported, the city was getting snow, freez ing rain, heavy sleet, thunder and fog. The cold front's eastward shove appeared to be slowing and was not expected to reach New York City and New England until after tomorrow. In New York a 44-year-old heat record was smashed today as the temperature climbed to 59.7 de grees at 3 a.m. EST and was fore cast to reach nearly 70 during the day. In the Chicago area, the mer cury plunged 35 degrees in eight hours last night. Sub-zero readings were com mon through the midwest and plains states. It was 30 below zero early today at Williston, N. D., and Havre, Mont., 27 below at Minot, N. D 23 below at Rapid City, S. D. Mason City, la., reported minus 10, International Falls, Minn., 11 below, and Omaha, Neb., and Des Moines, la., 6 below. The earth's atmosphere weighs about 5.900,000,000,000,000 tons, including the water vapor it con tains. Half of this total air mass is below altitude of 3.46 miles above sea level.
