PAGE SIX THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1949 Americans Favor Change in Irish Air Service By Brcmlitn M'aNh lVnil.-j'rrri. 8111 Cni"l'li't,ttt Dublin mi -TIip Into ol In' land s Shannon all pol l is In Un balance. American airlines representa tives have asked 1 hr Irish authori ties to allow their planes to pass Shannon ami land In Dublin. The nllernallve is to by pass Ireland altogether. Throe American civil aviation experts arrived In the caiptal to discuss the matter with the rov eminent, but no oflicial Rovein ment statement has been iued yet. One of the Americans, Paul BarrliiRer, director of the office of transport and communications, admitted that he v.-.s very much Impressed with the development of Shannon airport. Want Dublin l4wdlnfrs nut, he said, "a preat many American citizens of Irish extrac tion are anxious to have access to the capital of their motherland." "In recent conversations." lie went on, "both sides seemed to realize that sooner or later it was Inevitable that American earners should have an opportunity to serve the capital of Ireland, as they serve the capitals of other countries." Barrinper stressed American civil aviation authorities' belief that Dublin airport, as it now stands, could handle the largest type of Constellation and Sky master aircraft. "It is our feeling," he added. "that the time now has come to I face up to the development of 1 aeronautical science. A consider able numlier of our trans-Atlantic planes arc already living direct to ' London and lu is." ! He pointed out that Shannon! would always have lis place as a technical slop, and went on: I "As a customs-free airimrt, it can lie the cargo center for all Kuropc. Hut we feel that If the trans-Allaiillc pianes could fly into Dublin it would lie n means i of attracting many more Ameri can touiists to this country. Airrcomrnt Cited "By ileveloplnR the potentiali ties of Dublin, you will not be de tracting from Shannon, but add ing to the revenue of the country by increasing tourist traffic and thus increasing dollar earnings." The Americans, by ttie 19-15 agreement with Ireland, agreed to a clauf.e which said: "All eastward-bound air traffic on routes covered in this annex shall stop at the Shannon airport as first Kit ropean port, and all west bound air traffic on the same loules shall slop at Shannon." 'Hie l'n tied Staes airlines want this clause cancelled. Finance Minister Paddy MeGil ligan has referred to the "runways at Shannon as "the most expen sive bus of concrete in the world." and many Irishmen agree. une irisii observer said: 'XHily an American could blithely ask us to give up Shannon, and spend a ! million or two pounds to improve I the Dunlin airport. "Have we profited from Ameri can use of Shannon? Passengers j pop I", take a meal, and pop out. It seems to me the American lines j should contribute toward the up 'keep of the airport if thev are anxious to use it. Up to now we have spent 10 to earn II." OUT OUR WAY By J. ami R. Will: COME J.
