Coptic Monastery

wiiii, a siihurb of Cairo,
Doctor Ziiky Saad, of the I'.oyal
Kxcavatlous, revealed that during
the seventh hciisoii of excavations
he discovered this monastery,
which Is believed to have boused
some famous Keypllan historians.

the monastery was in use as early

no evidence of the time when It
was finally deserted.
It Is believed that this Is the
monastery mentioned by the Arab
historians Shu Sallli and Kl Klin
hoshty, who state that Caliph
Ahricl Aziz Ibn Marawan stayed
at a monastery In Helwan durinK
an Illness. 1
Canals Discovered
To the north of Ihe monastery
are the remains of small red brick
canals, obviously used for Irriuat
ItiK Kardcns .there. To the south
is a cemetery eontiiliiliiK
tombs, of which 15 are Intact.
The hoilles were wrapped In cloth,
completely de-viyil. and nothlnn
was left of the coffins but pieces
of rustiil Iron.
' This cemetery Was obviously
the burial place nf monks, as all
the bodies recovered are those of
males. With one of the bodies
was a flat rectangle of Ivory,
bearlDK a Coptic inscription, hul
It was too decayed to be deciph
ered. With another of the bodies was
a seal 111 silver, with lis owner's
name Inscribed on the flat base,
lie was a doctor called "K.lssI
iiiiih" or "Casinos."
Irrigation Provided
In the middle of the monastery
was i lai'ue water reservoir. On
one side was a swimming pool.
Another basin supplied the water
for IrrlKatlnc the (jarden.
Drains were fitted for Ihe dis
posal of water waste, which Inrll
com -that the monks maintained
a hli:h standard of cleanliness.
There are also vertical dralnane

Itemalns were also found of
mud and brick hullrilnus. one of
them obviously the residence of
a notahle, and of a bullillni; which
probably was a church.
