THE CHRISTMAS STORY
It ic an old story and it was told by different people, who
naturally told it in different ways according to their impres
sions of the sequence of events which occurred approximately
204S) years ago in Asia Minor. The story is that of the birth
of Christ, profoundly significant in its effect upon humanity
and in its influence on the trend of history in the centuries that
have followed. The anniversary of that event we call Christ
mas and we observe it understandingly o;- misuiierstanding
ly, depending upon our interpretation of its meaning. But
even in the blundering of misconception, it seems that, some
how, what we refer to, perhaps a bit vaguely, as the spirit of
Christmas still shines through and makes life and living
brighter and cheerier at this season of the year.
It is a season when we like to tell once more the story of
Christmas or, better, to repeat the words of one who told it
long, long ago. We give it now as it has come down to us in
the Gospel according to St. Luke.
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a
decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be
taxed.
(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was gov
ernor of Syria.)
And all went to be taxed, every one to his own city.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of
Nazareth, into Jud&a, unto the city of David, which is called
Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of
David:)
To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with
child.
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were
accomplished thiit she should be delivered.
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped
him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because
there was no room for them in the inn.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in
the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them., and the
glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were
sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not : for, behold. I bring
you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
. For unto you is born this day in the city of Da1d a Saviour,
which is-Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you ; Ye shall find the babe
wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the
heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will
toward men.
And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from
them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let
us now go even unto Bethlehem,' and see this thing which is
come to pass, wnicn the Lord hath made known unto us.
And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph,
and the babe lying in a manger.
And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the
saying which was told them concerning this child.
And all they that heard it wondered at those things which
were told them by the shepherds.
But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her
heart.
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God
for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was
told unto them.

Tonight and tomorrow there will be special services and
programs keyed on the underlying truths contained in this
old, old story. As we prepare for them, we think of one
already presented in which there was especial pleasure the
Christmas program of the music department of the high
school. It brought inspiration as well as enjoyment to the
many who were privileged to hear it.

Mother, Five
Children Lose
Lives in Fire
San Antonio, Tex., Dec. 24 mi
A mother and five of her seven
children died early today in a fire
that destroyed their home and left
the father and a sixth child criti
cally burned..
A seventh child escaped un
harmed. Firemen said Mrs. Maria Mon
telonga, 37, burned to death "like
a flaming torch" on the lawn of
the family's small three-room
residence on San Antonio's west
side.
She died as the flames killed
the five children- -Alejondro. 10;
Andrea. 7; Yolanda, 5; Alicia. 4,
and Carlos, 1.
The husband. Ascencion. 3fi, was
burned critically, as was 13-year-old
Franciscn, who suffered burns
over 90 per cent of her body. Bap
tist Memorial hospital attendants
said at mid-morning that both
remained in critical contlitions.
Firemen said the fire appar
ently started from an overheated
wood stove.
One Child Escape
They said the eight members
of the family had been "asleep in
every room in the house" and
cream-like water In ponds, col
ored by a clay soil and frozen
over. Chenopodiaceous shrubs
constituted the growth, and made
again our fire wood. The animals
were driven to the hill, where
there was tolerably good grass.
(To be continued)
OUT ON THE FARM
By Ha S. Grant
that several bodies were found
"right alongside the stove."
Nine-year-old Josefina Monte

family to eseuo unharmed, told
firemen that she uwoke and saw
the fire ami awakened her father.
The father, she said, loused the
mother and tried to lead her out
the front door. But It was lock
ed, the girl said, and her father
could not get it open.
Josefina said she managed to
get the door open and run for
help before her clothing ignited.
Uy the tunc she could get
neighbors to tile scene, however,
the frcshly-iHiintcd house was al
most solid flame.
The lather, who was an unem

home which he owned, the girl
said.
She said the family Christmas

the stove where Andrea, lolanda
