THE CHRISTMAS STORY It ic an old story and it was told by different people, who naturally told it in different ways according to their impres sions of the sequence of events which occurred approximately 204S) years ago in Asia Minor. The story is that of the birth of Christ, profoundly significant in its effect upon humanity and in its influence on the trend of history in the centuries that have followed. The anniversary of that event we call Christ mas and we observe it understandingly o;- misuiierstanding ly, depending upon our interpretation of its meaning. But even in the blundering of misconception, it seems that, some how, what we refer to, perhaps a bit vaguely, as the spirit of Christmas still shines through and makes life and living brighter and cheerier at this season of the year. It is a season when we like to tell once more the story of Christmas or, better, to repeat the words of one who told it long, long ago. We give it now as it has come down to us in the Gospel according to St. Luke. And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was gov ernor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Jud&a, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished thiit she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them., and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not : for, behold. I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. . For unto you is born this day in the city of Da1d a Saviour, which is-Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you ; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem,' and see this thing which is come to pass, wnicn the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. an tail , Tonight and tomorrow there will be special services and programs keyed on the underlying truths contained in this old, old story. As we prepare for them, we think of one already presented in which there was especial pleasure the Christmas program of the music department of the high school. It brought inspiration as well as enjoyment to the many who were privileged to hear it. Christ mas in lands of the fir tree and pine, Christmas in lands of the palm-tree and vine; Christmas where snow-peaks stand solemn and white, Christmas where corn fields lie sunny and bright." On Calico farm, there is an over-sized Christmas card framed in the picture window. Pine boughs and red candles on the window sill punctuate the country landscape, with the snow-covered mountains glistening In the win ter sun. The fir tree the Chief brought home from the woods is a daz zling spectacle, with' colored lights, silver rain and glass baub les of all colors. The cats seem to think we fixed it just for their ex press pleasure, and they love to play hide and seek umler the branches. s j The Young Man Insisted on presents for all the animals. A Christmas bell for Gypsy's bridle, a bow for Jiggs' collar, catnip mice for the cats, and nest eggs for the chickens. The whole family gathers in the kitchen, where the holiday cook ing is going on. Busy as these days are, there's time to bake mince pies, fruited applesauce cake and Christmas cookies. The Chief always pops popcorn, cracks nuts and makes fudge. All through the house, the Christmas-tide holds sway.
