refused to take part in the plot
and warned Chiang, who sent his
top aide to Kunming In an effort
to stop the plotters.

here that the United States has
been sending large quantities of
equipment to Generalissimo
Chiang Kai-shek's Island bastion
of Formosa.

United States was taking positive
action to counteract the Chinese
communist threat to the Chinese
nationalist island. Cow ifsts
now are arrayed across a narrow
strip of water from the island.-

the equipment was carried in sev
eral boats. He added that the re

Coal Situation
Still Unsettled
Washington, Dec. 12 IP Some
soft coal operators today toyed
with the idea of forcing John L.
Lewis to call another strike after
Jan. 1 if he doesn't order the
miners out on his own.
They were considering a pro
posal by one Industry official that
further payments to the United
Mine Workers' multi-million-dol
lar health and welfare fund be
ended when changes Lewis engi
neered go into ellect.
The UMW president, meantime,
was expected to announce that
more independent companies have
agreed to his 1949-51 contract
terms. But most major produc
ers still are holding out. Unless
Lewis corralled a big block of
operators over the week end. he
still will have less than five per
cent oi the Industry signed up.
The major producers said Lew
is' divide-and-conquer campaign
has "bogged down" and he is get
ting practically nowhere in his
efforts to force the big operators
to fall in line behind their small
er competitors.
They are convinced that only
government - Intervention under
the Taft-Hartley law, with its 80
day anti-strike injunction, can end
the long-standing dispute. They
also believe that only a full sus-
ptrnbiun oi operation, uruereu uy
Lewis or the owners can bring
that about.
In their view, the ' three-day
work week was a "stor-gap" move
by Lewis' to' get hbvtiinrs jam
pre-Christrrias" pay and herrtrtyT
put them back on a "no work1
schedule the first of the year. '
