Results Berserk Veteran Shot by Deputies Seattle, Dec. 12 HP) A berserk war veteran who wounded one man and threatened to murder his estranged wife, was In crit ical condition today from shot gun wounds received in a four hour gun battle with deputy sheriffs Sunday. Allan C. Finley, 39, fired more than 20 shotgun blasts ajt eight carloads of officers who sur rounded his north Seattle home, according to sheriff's deputy timo Muagens. Tear gas oomos were hurled into the house when Finley refused to come out. Mrs. Geneva Finley, estranged wile of the barricaded man, pleaded with him to stop firing and leave the house. She talked to him over a public address sys tem set up by sheriff's officers. Finley replied with another shotgun blast. - He was captured when Hud gens approached a window and shot him In the right arm and thigh. Hudgens said he fell to the floor screaming for help. Neighbor Wounded Alsc wounded was Robert E. Bundy, 49, who lives In a house adjoining Flnley's. He was shot in the right arm by Finley when Bunay went to tne aid of Fln ley's wife. Mudgens said Mrs. Finley had gone to Flnley's home to prepare his dinner. But he leveled a shot gun at her and ordered her to sign a note saying she had come to his home to kill him. He threatened to shoot her and when she refused to sign the note he fired a blast into the wall near her, Mrs. Finley said. She told officers she escaped from the house and asked Bunday to help her. Bundy knocked on Flnley's front door and Finley- answered with two shotgun blasts fired through the door. Officers arrived but Finley fir ed at anyone who approached the house. Deputies said they tried to arrest him without shoot ing, but were forced to fire at the end of the four-hour siege. Hospital attendants today de scribed -Sunday's condition as "unsatisfactory." . Coal Situation Still Unsettled Washington, Dec. 12 IP Some soft coal operators today toyed with the idea of forcing John L. Lewis to call another strike after Jan. 1 if he doesn't order the miners out on his own. They were considering a pro posal by one Industry official that further payments to the United Mine Workers' multi-million-dol lar health and welfare fund be ended when changes Lewis engi neered go into ellect. The UMW president, meantime, was expected to announce that more independent companies have agreed to his 1949-51 contract terms. But most major produc ers still are holding out. Unless Lewis corralled a big block of operators over the week end. he still will have less than five per cent oi the Industry signed up. The major producers said Lew is' divide-and-conquer campaign has "bogged down" and he is get ting practically nowhere in his efforts to force the big operators to fall in line behind their small er competitors. They are convinced that only government - Intervention under the Taft-Hartley law, with its 80 day anti-strike injunction, can end the long-standing dispute. They also believe that only a full sus- ptrnbiun oi operation, uruereu uy Lewis or the owners can bring that about. In their view, the ' three-day work week was a "stor-gap" move by Lewis' to' get hbvtiinrs jam pre-Christrrias" pay and herrtrtyT put them back on a "no work1 schedule the first of the year.
