, 1. 11. J J., PAGE EIGHT THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON MONDAY, DECEMBER 5, 149 Nations Water Supply Running Short, Reported (Br Unltrd Pru) The nation' most precious re source, water, Is running short in many sections, a United Press survey showed today. . In a few cases, such as at New York, the water shortage is a momentary matter, caused by a lack of rainfall. . But in vast areas of the mid west, southwest and far west, agriculture and Industry are be ginning to feel the pinch of ground water shortages as moist ure tables drop far beneath the surface. Geologists and other experts said the falling water table was a simple case of too much water being taken out of the ground too fast for nature to replenish the subterranean lakes, rivers and rivulets that seep precious moist ure through the rocks to fill wells and reservoirs. Vast Amounts Used Modern air conditioning sys tems, for example depend on huge quantities of cold water, drawn from the earth to circulate through their mechanisms and provide the low temperatures to chill air. ' In some localises, such as Illi nois, distilleries and other indus tries use so many millions of gal lons of water that they must sink wells hundreds of feet into the earth as the natural reservoirs drop deeper and deeper. ' In the west, vast irrigation projects are diverting water from its natural watersheds through canals and ditches for surface use to water plants in areas that are naturally arid. Some pessimistic geologists warn that unless emergency mea sures are taken to halt the trend, big sections of the nation might become desert wastelands or dust bowls. Congregations at 32 New Brunswick, N. J., churches pray ed for rain yesterday and were blessed by a steady downpour that continued for several hours. The 200 families at Roosevelt. N. J., had water run from their taps for the first time in a week when one of the town's two ar tesian wells was deepened. The 900 inhabitants had been supplied by tank trucks. Excessive pumping for irriga tion and industrial use was blam ed for critical water shortages in California's San Joaquin valley and in the Los Angeles area. Seri ous situations from the same causes were reported in the Santa Clara valley, Salinas valley. Ante lope valley and the Ventura-Ox-nard areas. Jefferson Farm Madras. Dec. 5 A session of the Jefferson county agricultural 'council here the past week re vealed that the 1949 farm pro duction of the county is estimat ed at a gross income of $7,468, 654, more than six times as great as the $1,163,010 of 1929 and near ly 13 times as great as the $582. 676 for the year 1939, when prices bt agricultural products were low. Seed crops were in the fore front for the year Just ending, with estimates totaling $2,376, 275. Ladino clover topped this list, Its 1949 value being placed at $1,739,933. The ladino crop was harvested from 6,200 acres. Hay production came second with the total of Its value placed at $1,388,000. Alfalfa crops ac counted for $1,188,000 of the to tal hay production. Livestock ac counted for $1,056,000, with beef cattle producing $888,500 of this amount. Frost, it was revealed, took a heavy toll of the Jefferson coun ty potato crop this year. The crop's value is estimated at $1, 147,000 for 1949. It would have been $500,000 greater but for the October frost damage. County Agent Hollis Ottoway said the damage from the October freeze will result tn potato crop losses this year to some growers. Present at the agricultural council session were Mrs. Ray Carpenter, from home and rural life committee; Henry Thornton, land use committee; T. A. Power, county judge; Ralph Beck, assis tant director of the Oregon State college extension service; and County Agent Hollis Ottoway, M. A. Hagood and Oliver Wilson. Of the vocal numbers, an audi ence favorite was "Orchestra Song," by William Schuman, in which each voice part imitated an instrument, with clarinet, vio lin, bassoon, drums and horn sim ulated.
