America Warned
Of Red Sabotage
In Event of War
By Frank Elcazcr
lUnltnl 1'rcM ttU CurrMpotultnO
Washington, Dec. 5 The Li
brary of Congress, In a study of
defense plans, warned that a
"disciplined army" of communist
' agents la ready to sabotage
America In event of war wiih
Kussia.
A public affairs bulletin, pub
lished by the library's legislative
reference service, cautioned
against complacency based on
the fact that attempted sabotage
by Nazi agents here at the start
1 of World War II was successful
ly thwarted.
"The numbers of the latter (the
Nazis) were small, their tech
niques crude, and their identifica
tion easy compared with the dis
ciplined army of communists,
many of them American citizens,
who may be expected to work
against the nation in the event
of war with a communist power,"
the library said.
103 Pages
S. Arthur Devan, a national de
fense analyst of the reference
service, prepared the report, a
105-page analysis of the "fun
damental considerations" on
which this country's defense
plans must be laid. .
The report warned that there
con be no complete security in
a .military sense and that the
atomic bomb is not the "absolute
weapon."
It said the guided missile is the
weapon most likely to cause rev
olutionary change in warfare. It
hinted that this development may
prove more costly than the atom
ic bomb. i
"Atomic bombs, at the present
time, are said to cost many mil
lions of dollars each," the report
said. "But an atomic bomb sci
entist, perhaps as familiar with
that weapon as any one in the
nation, recently found himself
shocked by the cost of guided
missiles, which probably will be
the great weapons of the future.
"He said if we were to defend
only the city of Washington with
guided missiles, we might as well
build a wall of gold around it."
Girl's Lips Type
Her, Scribe Says
Buffalo, N.Y. IP) Use a steady
hand when you put on that lip
stick, sister.
For, according to a New York
university faculty member, the
shape of your mouth is a tip-off
to your whole personality.
Mrs. Veronica Dengel, author
and beauty engineer, counsels
young men in search of a mate
to study the prospects' lips.
All feminine mouths can be
classified in five categories, Mrs.
Dengel claims. And here's the
way she tabs them:
1. Thin lips conservative type.
The girl is usually an introvert.
Most women in this category are
content to remain spinsters and
look upon men with suspicion.
They lack feeling and are shy
and reticent.
2. Large full lips dramatic
type. This girl Is an extrovert.
She is romantically expressive,
theatrical and bizarre.
3. One thin and one full lip
executive type. This girl is the
business type. She is serious and
scholastically minded, works ea
gerly and conscientiously with
any task and has a sensible bal
ance of values.
4. Full center feminine type.
This girl is the housewife type.
She wants marriage and makes
a successful career of marriage
and love.

Battle to Whip
Arthritis Shows
Good Progress
Bv Paul V. Kills
tOnitvU I'm Scivnc Kditur)
New York. IVc. 5 dli The but
tle to whip arthritis, one of mini's
most crippling diseases, has
reached a milestone comparable
to the day that the first atom
bomb went off, a group of physi
cians agreed.
The doctors, mcmbcis of the
medical and scientific committee
of the arthritis und rheumatism
foundation, said they were relet--ring
specifically to the discovery
of the new drugs cortisone und
acth and what they have meant
in the ramuaign against arthritis.
Dr. Cornelius rraeger, one of
the group, recalled that out of
the first atomic explosion in New
Mexico only a small portion of
the potential energy contained in
the bomb was utilized.
So it is with (he new hormone
substances, he suid. und that as
time goes on the efficiency like
that of the bomb will be In
creased. The meeting here was with
members of the National Associ
ation of Science Writers. They
were shown a new movie of three
case histories of arthritis that
were treated either by cortisone
or acth. In each case there was
dramatic improvement, but in
each case the patient relapsed af
ter administration of the drug
was ceased.
Supply Inadequate
Dr. Traeger said that under
present means of production it
would take the bile from all the
oxen "in the world" to treat 100
patients. Cortisone is manufac
tured from hormonal substances
in the ox bile that come from
the adrenal cortex. Acth Is ex
tracted from the pituitary glands
of cattle.
The foundation is now In a
campaign to raise $2,000,000 to
carry out further research and
to purchase the rare drugs for
use in patients. Some of the
money, too, will be spent in the
training of physicians on tech
niques in administration of the
drug..
Onlv recently, the Merck & Co.,
pharmaceutical house, Rahway,
N.J., announced that- the price ot
cortisone had been reduced from
$250 a gram to $130, still a pre
cious price' The company also
has again taken over the duty
of distribution of the drug, an
indication that the scientists are
making headway in improving
production methods.
Doctors are finding the drug
causes bad reactions in some pa
tients, but believe that In time

TRENDS IN BUILDING COSTS Building costs have declined,
but not very much, from their all-time peaks of 1948. A brick home
