Mt. Etna Lava
Still Spreading
Cantanla, Sicily, Dec, 3 HP" A
steaming river of molten lava
from ML Etna swallowed up
three big vineyards and oozed
relentlessly on through pine for

of Bronte, live miles away.
Inhabitants of Bronte and near

Boy Faces Loss
Of One Good Eye
Seattle, Dec. 3 lut Blond, two-and-one-half-year-old
Dean Ault
played with his teddy-bear today
while his distraught parents
faced the decision of blindness or
possible death for the curly
haired youngster.
Dean lost his right eye six
weeks ago when cancer set in
An eye specialist said today
that unless the boy's other eye
were removed, the growth will
spread to the optic nerve and
eventually to the brain, possibly
killing him. - ".- -Jack
L. Ault, 32, an unemployed
construction cost accountant,
said:
"It's a tough decision to make.
. . . As long as he has a slim
chance, that's all we're fighting
for. There is nothing to lose by
trying to save what little sight
he has left."
Dean looked up from the floor
where he was playing and smiled.
Ault, and his wife, Jacqueline,
have two other sons, Donald, sev
en, and Douglas, six.
Fall Involved
Dean, born with weak eyes, fell
off a chair five months ago. It is
believed that the fall caused the
eye condition.
Even If the left eye is removed,
doctors say there is no assurance
the cancer will be arrested.
There's no sure way of sav
ing his life, anyway," the -boy's
father said. "If anything can be
done, it should be tried. But what
can we do?"
Ault feels that If he - decides
against the operation and Dean
dies, "I'll always think I didn't
do everything I possibly could
have done."
"But it's hard to order an eye
operation that will bring blind
ness to your son."
Almost blind. Dean barely can
distinguish between light and
dark. A square white patch of
surgical gauze covers the place
where his right eye normally
would be.
