lied justice by slapping Hideki
Tojo on the head the first day of
the Tokya war crimes trials and
then convinced doctors of his In
sanity, is in circulation again.
Okawa is busy turning out lit
erature and has completed the
first Japanese translation of the
Mohammedan Koran. The work
will be published by early Decem
ber and will he followed by a
book he now is writing in Eng
lish, "The Character of the Japa
nese People."
Okawa, whose career still is
shrouded In mystery, lives quiet
ly in a small suburban home,
cleared of all the charges which
sent seven of his co-aefendants
to the gallows and 18 others to
prison.
Okawa was the only represen
tative of the Dowerful Japanese
the allied prosecution as the chief
unofficial propagandist behind the
scheme to drive the' vnhlte races
out of Asia and set up Japanese
rule over "the foundation of the
world." . ,.
Slapped Tojo
On May 3, 1946, as the interna
tlonal military tribunal sessions
opened, the thin, bi-year-oiu
Okawa entered the prisoners
docket wearing what looked like
a worn pair of pajamas. Court
proceedings were going along in
digniiied manner, when UKawa
seated ' directly behind Tojo,
reached forward and slapped the
former premier several, times oh
his bald head. . ' '
Both American and Japanese
doctors pronounced him insane
and he was confined in a local
asylum, where he remained
throughout the trial. iokvo
newspapers reported that he was
making a "remarkable recovery"
shortly after Jils former co-defendants
were sentenced last No
vember. .' . '
When Gen. Douglas MacArthur
granted amnesty to all untried
"Class A" war crimes suspects
shortly after Tojo was executed,
Okawa Became a iree man. wiuy

ed sane and released from the
hospital.

midwest, a recent survey here -shows.
The Research Council for Eco
nomlc Security polled 3,965 firms

cago, t. Louis, Pittsburgh, Twin
Cities, Detroit and Cleveland.
The findings were published
under the title, "The Midwest Sur-
vey of Employe Benefit Plans."
The poll snowed more than 75
per cent of the workers have life
insurance, and more than 70 per
cent have prepaid hospitalization
plans. Almost 50 per cent have
taken out surgical benefit plans. .

About 40 per cent of the work

TRAPPER'S BODY FOUND

Ortman, 64-year-old trapper miss
ing from his cabin in the Steam
boat area of Applegate valley
since November 12, was found
dead Sunday by a search party.
The body was found about a half-
mile from ortman s cabin.
Death apparently resulted from
a heart attack, Coroner Carlos
