Young Husband
Takes Own Life
After Honeymoon

A 20-year-old bridegroom of one
day scrawled a suicide note on
the back of his marriage certifi
cate then killed himself because
he married the wrong girl, police
said today.
Former high school football
star Tommy Lee Schwader wrote
a trembling farewell note to his
. 16-year-old bride, Edna Irene
(Jackie) Hamman, wmcn saiu in
Dart:
"If anybody ever tells you this
is a coward s way out,- you try it
once. . . Jackie, please don't
dream."
The youth's body, the muzzle
of a 12-gauge shotgun jammed
against his head, was found in his
car yesterday barely a day after
he and Jackie were marrlea in
Yuma, Ariz. He had fired the
death blast with his big toe.
Beside his body, officers
found a Yuma, Ariz., marriage
certificate with a scrawled suicide
note on the back. In his pocket,
they found a note from the girl
he had courted for months, Betty
Jean Cron, 16, that turned down
his plea to "go steudy."
."Tommy was sore because I
had broken with him," Betty
Jean, the bride's best friend, ex
plained today.
Married Wrong Girl
"ItC married the wrong girl,
not the girl he loved. I was sure
It would not work out."
Although they went out togeth
er in a party Saturday night,
Betty Jean said the final break
in their romance came the day
before, when he found she had
dated another boy.
But Saturday night after the
party Schwader, a Compton col
lege student, talked Jackie into
accompanying him to Yuma
where they were married by a
Justice of the peace.
"I thought I loved him," Jackie
told police. "But on the way back
from Yuma, I suddenly felt it was
all wrong. I told him so."
They went to a motel, however,
where she said she told him she
didn't love him and couldn't live
with him.
It was then that the one-time
high school football star threat
ened to take his life, the sobbing
girl said.
After the tight-lipped youth
drove her to her home, he disap
peared. Ills parents, Mr. and Mrs. Karl
Schwader, searched frantically
for him most of Sunday nlgnt.
But a stranger, L. C. Walling,
was the first to discover Tommy's
auto and its grisly contents.
His pretty, red-haired bride was
at home when the news came
that she was a widow. Her friend,
Betty Jean, was in high school.
The youths suicide note urged
his mother not to "carry on too
much."
AU.ES PTA TO MEET

ties, and colored slides of the
Bend school syslern will be shown.
Musical numbers are also being
planned, and refreshments will
be served after the meeting.
CHANGE MEETS TONIGHT
Carroll Acres, Nov. 15 (Spe
cial) Pine Forest grange will
meet tonight at 8 p.m., with ihe
third and fourth degrees to be
conferred. Women are to take
sandwiches for the social hour, it
was announced.

home.
Pythian Sisters will have an
nual roll call at the regular meet
ing Thursday at 8 p.m., In the
library auditorium. Officers re
quested all members to be pres
ent. For refreshments, each mem
ber is being asked to take a sack
lunch. Final plans will be made
for the bazaar to be held Friday,;
Nov. 18, in the Pacific Power and
Light company building.

theria death toll was five in Jack
son county today after the death
of a nine-year-told girl in a Med
ford hospital.
It was the 16th case of the dis
ease reported in recent weeks.

lead the devotions service, and
Mrs. Phil Philbrook will have
charge of the program.

home of Mrs. B. P. Elster, on the
old Bend-Redmond highway. Mrs.
Gordon Wilcox will give a talk
on "Bulbs" and Mrs. Sid Conk
lin will discuss "Soil Conservation."
