Portland Recall
Movement Lags
Portland. Nov. 10 HI1' --Advocates
of the recall campaign
against Portland Mayor Dorothy
McCullough Lee began to pump
life intri their hoprinc? enmnaien
today bv making a last effort
to round up signed petitions and
money to keep the effort going
until its December 12 deadline.
Maxwell Donnelly, attorney anil
adviser for the group, charged at
their meeting Wednesday night
persons at first eager to help In
the recall movement now were
frightened by newspaper pub
licity.
"They feared reprisal, he salt!
"from the police or from the
city's business Inspectors."
Donnelly said the recall effort
will continue if enough response
generates by Saturday. At least
26.095 signatures must be turned
over to the city auditor by De
cember 12 in order to call a re
call election.
So far 1,73-1 signatures have
been validated, but Donnelly said
he had another 4,000 in his office.
By Saturday, recallers hope to
round up as many signed peti
tions as possible as well as addi
tional money to carry on the
campaign.
