Study of Hoover " Report Launched By Bend Group Study of the Hoover commis sion reHirt, which proposes reor ganization of the executive blanch of Ihe government for "in creased efficiency, better econo my and Improved administrative management, was launched by the llend Husiness and Profession al Women's club, at a dinner meeting last night at the Pine Tavern. Three members of the club sketched specific phases of the report In n panel discussion which followed Introductory remarks by Miss Clara Jones, public affairs chairman of the club. Speakers were Mrs. Fred Hale. Mrs. W. F. Andi-cws nnd Miss Crace Preston, who reviewed sections of the com pii'hensive report, which states that Ihe interest alone on the na tional debt this past year was more than the entire cost of fed eral government 16 years ago. .Started 2 Years Ago The report Is the result of ex tensive studies by a huge "task force." begun two" years ag) with ex l'resldent Herbert Hoover as chairman and Dean Acheson as vice-chairman. Mrs. Hale discussed the postal service, which is now the world's largest business. Althouch reve nue has increased from $38,000 in 17!K) to over a billion dollars an nually In recent years, the lip proximate loss IrN operating the department In 1!M9 will be 500 million dollars, she said. She quoted the report, which advo cates elimination of politics from the postal service, with postmast ers, as well as all other employes lo come under the civil service setup. Duplication and over centralization make the workings of the service clumsy ami ineffec tual, she slated, mentioning the commission's contention that the service is ofen used to "hide sub sidies." Mrs. Andrews discussed the commission's findings on Indian affairs, stressing the recommen dation that the bureau of Indian affairs eventually should be elim inated altogether, with Indians In tegrated Into the general popula tion as self-supporting, tax-paying citizens, rntjier than being segre gated and supported on reserva tions. Miss Preston discussed the gov ernment's supply business, stat ing that more than six billion dol lars a year Is spent for supplies, and more than one billion a year for transporting personal prop erly. She said that there are enough government records to fill six buildings Ihe size of the Pen tagon building. Study of the Hoover report Is tlie nallnnal project this year for Ihe .lunlon chamber of commerce. It was pointed out: The Hend Jaycees and HPW club are work ing out a program lor local study. 3 Persons Killed In Highway Crash Pendleton, Nov. 10 dli Three ersons were killed early today when a speeding new automobile crashed into the rear of a stalled truck and trailer at milepost 215 on highway 30. , Dead were Jack Lewis.
