However, the Bruins kept their 1949 record from being marred with a defeat, and now boast a record of three wins, no losses, and one tie. Next Saturday the Bruin jay vees again will take on the Red mond high school juniors in a night game at the latter's field. Game time will be 8 p. m. The Bears took an early lead over the Panther juniors when fullback Jim Gilliland galloped 55 yards for a touchdown on the first play after the opening kick off. Gilliland, who had taken the ball on the Bend 45, punched through the middle of the line, then cut to the outside of field and drove into the Redmond end zone standing up. The try for extra point failed. Panthers Show Power The game was a see-saw affair until late in the second quarter. The Redmond Panthers t he n turned on the power and drove from their own 35 on successive plays and scored. Their try for point also failed. The Panthers again threatened In the third quarter but were held on a goal line stand by the Bruin squad, and the Bears took over on downs on their own 1-yard . line. Bend scored again early In the " fourth quarter on an end run play from the Panther 6, but the score was nullified when' Bend was penalized five yards for back- field in motion. Al Burmeister, the Bruin left half had carried the ball across the goal line on . the touchdown play. Drive Bogs Down A later drive by the Bears bog ged down on the Panther 40 when a Bruin pass was bobbled and recovered by the Redmond team. He proved a capable re placement for the ever-weeping Francis. It taxed even the capable Moose to find something which would still the hosannas of the subway alumni. But he made a game effort by pointing out that three men end Leon Hart and tackles Jim Martin and Bob To neff play both offense and de fense. After all, there are only 75 on the squad. "Fair" Players Even Moose had to admit that those three are pretty fair coun try ball players. Toneff, a 232- pounder from Barberton, O., has blocked five enemy punts this season. Yes, he will be a fine player some day," Krause admitted cau tiously. As for Martin, the Cleveland giant, and Hart, the 245-pounder irom turtle creek, fa., Krause confessed that they, too, were comers." Risking the wrath of Leahy, Krause admitted that the Notre Dame backfield was "pretty fair." 'Emil Sitko and Larry Coutre were outstanding against Navy and Ernie Zalejski has been ap proaching expecta t i o n s," the Moose muttered apprehensively. "One of the finest developments has been that of quarterback Bobby Williams." New-Type Huddle Krause credited Williams' prog ress to the use of the "picture huddle" In which the team forms two tight l,ines "as if sitting for a family portrait." Williams then walks up facing them and gives his orders. 'That means there is no more debating in the huddle," Krause said. "Through its use, Williams has developed poise, probably be cause he doesn't have to listen to a lot of chatter." On top of which, he explained, the time saved permits Notre Dame to run about 10 to 15 more plays per game, a feature which causes increasing distress to rival defenders. Krause, asked how he rated this Notre Dame, gave Leahy's own answer. "Frank is an optimistic kind of person," Moose replied with the barest trace of humorous sar casm. "He said he didn't know for sure. Then they asked him how he rated it if kept winning the way it has been going. Leahy said he thought it might be pret ty good by the end of the season." Then why doesn't he tell the (Continued on Page 7) es and has thrown 10 for touch downs. "I think that USC can score at least five touchdowns in each of its remaining games with the pos sible exception of Notre Dame and they should make at least three against the Irish." "The Trojan team is tremen dous on defense, and sometimes they are just as tremendous on offense," said Fehring. "USC should be a four touch down favorite to whip Stanford," was the gloomy report that Feh ring gave to Stanford head coach Marchie Swartz.
