I PAGE EIGHT THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1949 r ; H s Federal Help Still Possible In Land Clearing Deschutes ranchers who need moro Drcmancnt uusture or crest ed wheat grass range may still obtain government assistance for clearing brush land and buying seed under the 19-19 agriculture conservation program, according to H. P. Eby, chairman of the Deschutes County Agricultural Conservation association. Fifty nor cent of the cost, up to $5 per acre, of clearing land for pasture, and 50 per cent of the cost of the seed, up to $t per acre, will be paid by the federal fjovernment. Any method of clear ng that will kill 75 per cent of the brush outright Is eligible for pay ment, fc-by said. Burning Cheapest Burning Is probably the cheap est method and can be done only It weather conditions are right, if sufficient equipment is available and precautions are taken to con trol the fire, proper fire permits have been issued and if plant growth Is heavy enough to carry the fire without leaving unburned spots. Stands of brush that are too thin to burn welt, may some times be burned by seeding to rye. After the rye has matured and the seed has been harvested, the stubble and brush are burned together. Heavy brush may be removed, Eby stated, by first breaking it down with heavy steel rails and beams or sleds, raking the brush into windrows and then burning. Lighter stands of brush may be plowed directly with a heavy disk plow. A special brush land disk plow that will clean brush on rocky ground has been developed by the U. S. forest service. The disks of this plow are mounted in gangs of two, and each gang has an in dependent knee-action, that lets it ride over rocks and uneven ground. Strong springs hold the disks in the ground. Heavy brush may be removed by bulldozing when the soil is frozen. The bulldozer blade will slide over the frozen ground and shave off the brush without mov ing much soil. To receive payment for clearing land ranchers must apply for aid before clearing is begun so that the uncleared area may be in-1 spected. Payment under the 1949 program may be made only on work done before January 1, 1950, Eby stated. Payments for clearing land" may not be avail able under the 1950 program. Pas ture or range seeding payments now are available only when all grass seedings are made. Mickey Cohen Gets Jitters I.os Angeles, ' Oct. 13 Ui Jit tery gangster Mickey Cohen fear ed toila that the "same guys" who picked off three of his aides were responsible for the disap pearance of a fourth member of his mob. The diminutive gambling boss reported to police last night that David Ogul, his 30-year-old body guard and chauffeur, had been missing since Monday. Two Cohen mobsters have been shot to death within the past year, Cohen himself has been wound ed, and his henchman, Frank Nlc coll. vanished mysteriously Sep tember 2. "Somebdy Is out to get me and my friends," Cohen said. "I don't kiiow who it Is. That's some thing I've been trying to find out for a year and a half." The disappearance of Niecoll and Ogul also increased the fi nancial worries of the little mob ster, who complained recently that he was "practically broke." Cohen has put up S50.000 bond for Niccoli and S25.000 for Ogul in an assault case involving the gang chief and seven of his hench men. If they do not show up for trial Cohen stands to lose the money. Ogul left Cohen's Sunset strip haberdashery Monday afternoon in his 1946 Cadillac car, telling his pals he had a date with a girl that night. He did not keep the engagement and failed to report to Cohen the next day. 1.INER FINALLY SAILS Sau Francisco, Oct. 13 Ui Tlu liner President Wilson was set to sail for the Orient today as tenta tive agreement was reached In a Jurisdictional dispute that tied the vessel up since Tuesday.
