Geiger Counters Selling
Faster Than Banned Novels

One of the post war world's most
IntrlKuIng products the geiger
counter has been selling faster
than a Boston-banned novel In the
northwest this year.
Dick E. Shanks,26, one of the
half -down dealers 'handling Reis
er counters in the region, reports
that anyone, from a grizzled old
prospector to the city's wealthiest
physician, is likely to step into
his 16 by 10 shop to buy the de
vice. A product of the atom age, the
counter is used to detect the pres
ence of radioactive material, espe
cially uranium. Portable units
such as Shanks sells weigh about
four pounds and sell for $55 to
$375.
Simple In Appearance
They are simple in appearance.
A pair of earphones conects with
a plain metal box, about the size
of a small portable radio or a
large camera. A 24-inch wire leads
from the box to a shiny aluminum'
cyltnder, the size of a standard
flashlight.
The heart of the mechanism is
a radiation-sensitive geiger-Muel-ler
tube contained in the cylinder.
Shanks, a navy veteran who
learned instrument work at the
Hanford atomic plant near Rich
land, Wash., has sold about 85
counters in the year he's handled
them. Just recently has he been
able to get enough to keep up
with demand.
"Doctors and dentists seem to
have a particular liking for the
counters," Shanks said. "They
take them along on vacations and
get in a little uranium prospect
ing as well as hunting and fish
ing." Others who have purchased the
device Include engineers, mining
companies, land owners, real
estate men and old-time prospec
tors. Appearance Deceptive
"More than once old duffers
have shuffled into the shop look
ing as if they expect a handout."
Shanks said. "But invariably, it'll
be a weather-beaten prospector,
and he'll slap down a hundred
dollar bill for a counter."
Shanks, w ho is nearly as proud
of his two-year-old business aa he
is of his two-weeks-old son. also
runs an impromptu assay office.
He said eight or ten" persons
stop in each day carrying samples
of ore. They want to know if it is
radioactive.
"I don't charge them anything
to test it," Shanks said. "There's
only one chance in a million that
any particular sample is "hot'."

added the geiger counter to his
list.

fice said Hansen crashed Sunday
afternoon on a flight from Baker
to Halfway. He had apparently
tried to turn back to Baker be
cause of rains but spun to the
ground from low altitude, the re
port said.

plane down with its wings aflame,
a mile from the crashed Aeronea.
However. Idaho and Oregon air
fields that launched elements of
the ISplane search fleet said all
of their aircraft returned safely
from yesterday's search.
Hesidents of Halfway said they
saw a plane crash yesterday
morning. This and Haimline's de
scription of the wreckage led au
thorities to believe the report.
