Boy Is Suicide
Klamath Falls, Oct 10 im Ten-
year-old Larry Bailey of Merrill,
Ore., committed suicide by hang
ing himself, Klamath county
Sheriff Jack Franey said today.
F raney said the boy s body was
found last night hanging by a
rope from a tree two miles south
of Merrill. Franey said Larry told
an older brother he was hitch
hiking to Portervllle, Calif., the
family's former home.
Larry s father, Alexander Bai
ley, told the sheriff the boy was
lonesome for his friends in Por
tervllle and had been despondent
ever since the family moved to
Merrill a short time ago.
Violence Flares
In Coal Strike
(Br Unitad Praia)
Violence erupted in the coal
strike again today while a threat
ening situation developed In the
nation-wide steel strike at Inland
Steel company's plant at East Chi
cago, Ind.
In a third big labor dispute, a
strike threat arose against the
nation s 130 major railroads.
The brightest spot In the labor
picture was the 32-day old Missou
ri Pacific railroad strike, in which
negotiations were resumed with
"high hopes" of settlement soon.
In the coal strike, pickets raid
ed the non-union A. & M. Coal
Co. in Clarion county. Pa., setting
fire to the mine tipple. State po
lice patrolled non-union fields in
both West Virginia and fennsyt-
vania as non-union mines re
opened after a week-lone truce.
In the steel strike, pickets at
Inland's East Chicago plant were
ordered to stand shoulder to
shoulder to prevent management
officials from entering or leaving
the plant. But company spokes
men said they would continue to
enter or leave as the occasion re-
aulred.
There were indications that the
government soon might intervene
in an attempt to seme me nation
wide steel walkout, r ederal medi
ation director Cyrus S. Ching said
some action in the stalemate is
"possible" this week.
In the nation-wide rail dispute,
union officials representing 110,
000 firemen and enginemen re
jected the report of a presidential
fact-finding board which opposed
hiring an additional fireman for
each bie diesel locomotive.
The union ordered its ates"'
committee to resume negotiations
and to take a strike vote il neces
sary." Teachesrs
