Meehan aid he had "not report

The Dalles situation.
"I am not required to do so.
This is entirely an Oregon affair
and the only outsiders involved
are the 'big five' (of Hawaii) and
strikebreakers from California.
The governor should know this."
Meehan said:

a right to ask Mayor E. G. Mauser

interests of this community and
luture prosperity, or if he Is go

Leo Levensen, Portland, attor
ney for the longshoremen, con
ferred with uion leaders today
on the restraining order.
Herb Alden, Oregon Journal
photographer, and Frank Ster
rett, Portland Oregonlan photos
rapher, were standing on a street
corner when a longsnoreman ap-
proacnea tnem and said:
"There's a couple of good cam-
eras. I u have one of those be
fore the day is over."
Six men. Including two news
papermen, were Injured yester
day when 250 longshoremen
broke through a police line and
roughed up AFL truck drivers
and non-union townspeople who
had been unloading $800,000
worth of pineapple tidbits barged
here irom strike-bound Hawaii.
Six men were injured, several
of them newsmen, in dockside
violence yesterday. Longshore
pickets dumped pineapple cases,
smashed a big loading crane with
sledge-hammers, snipped guide
wires and pulled out the crane's
motor batteries.
The violence broke out when
non-union stevedores, some of
them ranchers and townspeople,
started to unload cases of pine
apple from the Isleways, Ltd.,
barge. The pineapple was cut and
loaued by non-union men in Ha
waii, where the CIO longshore
men have been on strike for near
ly five months.
230 Charge Dock
Some 250 Cio longshoremen,
including 100 from Portland,
rushed the 18 amateur longshore
men with cries of "Let's get
those finks." They broke through
a to man police cordon.
After order was restored, the
Isleways company got a court
order temporarily forbidding the
union to establish a picket line
around the docks or to interfere
with trucks. Circuit judge Mal
colm W. Wilkinson scheduled a
hearing on a temporary injunc
tion tomorrow.
Matt Meehan, international rep
resentative of the longshore un
ion, said 500 longshoremen would
be on hand today but that they
would respect the order and
would not step loot on the city
owned docks.
I'm for peaceful picketing," he
said. "Nothing will happen m this
town as long as were picketing
in it."
R. M. Botley, president of Isle
ways, said tnere would be no
more unloading until after to
morrow's hearing on a tempor
ary injunction, or until It could
be done "peacefully." He added
it would take two days to fix
the crane.
Farmers Angry
Meanwhile, there were rumors
that angry townspeople were
planning a "rifle brigade" to run
"foreign' longshoremen out of
town. Earlier Gunther Krause, at
torney for Hawaiian pineapple
interests, urged Mayor Fred Mau
ser to appeal lor a pitchfork
brigade.
Injured in yesterday's violence
were Robert Lackunlach, San
Francisco, a Life magazine pho
tographer, whose camera was
smashed; Clarence Rosales, 45,
San- Jose, Calif., truck driver;
Ray Curto, 37, San Jose, another
truck driver; George Lindsay, bO,
publisher of The Dalles Optimist,
a weekly, whose camera also was
smashed; Don Hyman and Gene
Hoard, truck drivers.
After the volunteer crews ap
peared yesterday morning to un
load the barge, the longshoremen
called a strige against The Dalles
port. Railroad Brotherhood mem
bers respected their picket line,
and refused to move cars onto
the dock.

Daredevil Driver
Finds Highways
Unsafe Places

Spokane, Wash, itfi Custom
arily, the life Insurance salesman
Is the pursuer and the client Is
the pursued. But this custom is
shot to pieces when the agents
run across Freddie (Satan) La
Mont. "They lust laugh when I sug
gest insurance," he says.
i-or 14 years people have been
paying for 37-year-old Freddie's
groceries to see him try to break
his neck. LaMont Is a Hollywood
stunt driver and he has a travel
ing thrill show he calls "Satan's
Hell-Drivers. '
But Freddie finds lt hard to
understand why Insurance men
give him the cold shoulder. "Why,
when' I drive off a ramp at 40
miles per hour through a flam
ing hoop, I'm safer than most
motorists on the highways," he
said.
Freddie, whose nickname Is ac
centuated by a devil's goatee,
thinks the average motorist on
the road doesn't know what he
is doing.
Fears Highways
"I'm scared to death to drive
on the highways, he says. "Oh,
I've had a few tickets, but rare
ly for speeding. I'm a 30-mile-an-
hour man myself."
Every member of Freddie's
nine-man troupe knows exactly
wnai ne s going to do. A slip-up,
a miscalculation, and it could
mean death for any one of the
boys in the act.
"Nobody gets hurt when two
cars going 40 miles an hour col
lide head-on," Freddie says. "We;

Low Temperature
Studies Made
Pittsbureh (tP Scientist t hQ
Westinghouse laboratory are
llnding out what happens when
it gets really cold 458 degrees
below zero.
Dr. Aaron Wexler, head of low
temperature studies at Westing
house, revealed some of the
strange things that happen when
you get down to 458 degrees be
low zero. That is just one-tenth
of a degree above absolute zero,
where there is no heat at all.
"At such temperatures.' Dr.
Wexler explained, "the nature of
matter undergoes radical chang
es and behaves in a most myster
ious manner. For example, liquid
helium flows uphill and the flow
of electricity in a wire encounters
no resistance at ail. Although
these facts have been known ,for
years, scientists are striving' to
find out why this should happen."
Normally when electricity flows
through a wire it loses some of
its force and generates heat. At
super-cold temperatures this does
not happen. The current flows
without resistance and will con
tinue to flow even after the power
source has been shut off.
One of the projects on the re
search program is to discover al
loys that will conduct electricity
without resistance at tempera
tures above the extremely low
temperatures at which it can be
done now. If such an alloy can be j
found, the way would be opened
to the transmission of electricity
at lower cost and without loss.

Speed Checked,
Driver Fined
An unusual condition of a mu
nicipal court trial had been re
ported checked off today.
On September 20, city records
show, James M. Wood, Bend, was
cited Into municipal court on a
charge of operating his car at
65 miles an hour in a 25 mile an
hour zone in Bend. Wood ap
peared In court earlier this week,
entered a not guilty plea, and
told Judge A. C. Goodrich he was
certain his car could not do 65
miles an hour.
Judge Goodrich Immediately,
demanded a speed test, to deter
mine whether the car could reach
the 65 mile an hour mark, and
set the case over until this morn
ing. The test was made with a '
patrolman driving the car, with
Wood beside him. Checking the
speed was a patrolman in a police
car.
Officers said the car reached
the 65 mile mark, and probably
could do better. .,
Wood this morning was fined
$40, with $25 of this amount
suspended.
