British Cabinet
ill Face Test
Ixmdon, Sept. 26 HP The cab.
Inet decided today to ask parlia
ment for a vote of coruidenee on
Itg devaluation policy and Its re
fusal to back down on Its costly
health plan and other socialist
programs.
The ministers also decided to
refrain from elaborating on the
skimpy official announcement on
Russia's atomic explosion, even
though Winston Churchill will
press for more information.
- At a two-hour special session
the cabinet drafted a motion
which Sir Stafford Cripps will
lubmlt at the opening of debate
tomorrow.' Parliament was call
ed back from a recess for a spe
cial meeting to discuss devalua
tion. Prime minister Clement Attlee
and Health minister Aneurln Bev
an supported Cripps' original
pledge, that devaluation and all
other agreements reached at
Washington would not be allowed
to Interfere with the socialist pro
gram. The cabinet decided to meet the
opposition head-on for the devalu
ation debate. If the government
loses, it would have to resign and
call general elections at once.
But labor party whips sent
three-line notices to party mem
bers of parliament, and little like
lihood was seen of failure to
acquire the necessary majority.
Pineapple Barge

The Dalles waterfront is not or
ganized. Lyle Hlckok, president of the
port commission, said, ."We are
going to unload this barge. We
are not a union outfit."
Richard Botley, president of
Isleways, Ltd., owners of the pine
apple, said his firm would provide
120 trucks to move the near train
load of cargo once it" reaches the
dock.
AFL truck drivers agreed to
the plan, provided they are not
asked to unload cargo.
The barge was successfully bar
red at Tacoma and Seattle, Wash.,
by CIO pickets who tracked it by
seaplane about Puget sound.

Friday without a pilot the barge

trance after the picket showed
up.
Officials of the port of The
Dalles meanwhile received a tele
gram from the California Pro
ducers & Growers association,
saying that 5,000 cannery em
ployes have been laid off in Cali

from Honolulu via Seattle. The
pineapple was loaded aboard a
navy barge. It was towed here
by the tug Ono after it had been

The ability of international
longshoremen and warehousemen
(CIO) to batten down west coast
ports against non-union loaded
cargo from Hawaii appeared up
for its first real test, as the island
dock strike neared the five-month
mark.
The Dalles port commission
said it would permit the unload

demand for local processed cher
ries. It said labor would be hired
through the Oregon state employ
ment office.
Both cherries and pineapple are
used by fruit cocktail packers,
such as the San Jose, Calif., firm
to which the disputed pineapple
is consigned.
Matt Meehan, longshoremen s
representative, said the Isleways,
Ltd., shipment of pineapple was
declared "hot" after it left the
islands aboard a barge chartered
Irom the navy.

Portland U. Team
Portland, Sept. 26 UP A Uni
versity of Nevada football team,
which averaged 200-pluspounds
per man. pulverized a light but
fighting Portland university elev
en 53 to 27 yesterday.
Portland's light line scattered
before the Wolfpack's driving
ground attack tempered with
timely passes as the Nevadans
rolled up a convincing 40-6 lead
by the end of the third quarter.
A Pilot passing combination
of quarterback Dan Christianson
and halfback John Freeman
sparked a three-touchdown Port
land rally in the final period.
The game's biggest thrill came
when Nevada half Johnny Subda
closed the scoring with a 97-yard
runback of a kickoff.
Coach Joe Shekeetski returned
his gridders to Reno today where
they will prepare for Sunday's
game in San Francisco against
St. Mary's college.
WRONG MAN!
Lewiston, Mont., Sept. 28 IP
It was the first day of the hunt
ing season, and the hunter's mind
was on prairie chickens. As he
came out of a coulee yesterday,
a shotgun blast roared over his
head and he hit the dirt.
Shortly thereafter a red-coated
female rushed up to him and
asked if he were hurt.
"I'm awfully sorry," she apolo
gized. "I thought you were my
husband."
