Coast Conference Leaders
Come Through; Face Tougher
Contests This Week End
By Hal Wood
(United Press Sports Writer)
San Francisco, Sept. 26 OLE) The great leveling-off pro
cess in West coast football gets under way this week end.
Six major unbeaten teams left after last Saturday's en
gagements all put their unblemished two-week-old records on
the line against experienced and able foes with the chances
good that there will be an upset or two recorded before nightfall.
How good is 01' USC? Has Stanford got a point-a-minute
machine? Will the UCLA Bruins continue their surprising
march? Is Oregon really that
good? Can California contin
ue to win with those "long
gainers" as her only weapon?
How will WSC do in the big
time?
Those questions may be an
swered come Saturday night.
Right now most of the unbeat
en teams have looked impressive.
Stanford Potent
One of the great mysteries is
;he Stanford attack that has
scored 83 points in two games and
kept Its own goal line uncrossed.
The Indians, who drubbed Har
vard, 44-0, Saturday, get some
thing a bit tougher this week as
they take on a Michigan club that
ground past Michigan State for
its 24th consecutive victory. This
Is the game that will tell whether
coach Marchie Schwartz has a
wonder-team or Just a group of
line sophomores.
USC Clicks
USC, which clicked to perfec
tion in whipping Navy, 42.-0, tak
es on Washington State in a Pa
cific Coast conference game. The
Cougars already have two wins.
33-0 over Utah State, and 13-7 over
Montana. The caliber of opposi
tion they face this week is to be
somewhat different.
The best game of the week may
be the UCLA-Oregon tilt in the
Los Angeles coliseum and it
should attract nearly a full house.
Coach Red Sanders of the Bruins
wasn't expected to have much
this year, but in two tilts he wal
loped Oregon State, and then
turned around Saturday . and
thumped a good Iowa team, 41-25.
Oregon turned up with a 41-0 tri
umph over Idaho.
California, winner over St.
Mary's 29-7, gets its first Pacific
Coast conference test Oregon
State, which thumped Utah, 27-7.
The teams with records already
blemished haven't a very bright
future at least for this week.
Washington, soUndiy trounced by
Minnesota, 48-20, plays host to the
toughest boys in football the
Notre Dame Irish who walloped
Indiana as a starter.
Idaho Plays Texas
All little Idaho has to do to get
back on the win trail is to invade
the southwest and take on a Tex
as juggernaut that thrashed Tem
ple, 54-0, in its opener. Montana
may do better, taking on Utah
State in a Friday night game.
Nevada, a two-time winner, bat
tles St. Mary's in San Francisco;
Santa Clara, which eked out a last
half 14-13 victory over a solid San
Jose state team, takes on Fresno
State, a 20-7 winner over Cal Poly.
College of Pacific entertains Cin
cinnati at Stockton, and USF
plays host to Loyola in a San
Francisco night tilt.
Other week-end results; Whit
worth 21, St. Martin's 0; Camp
Pendleton 14, Cal. Ramblers 14
(tie); Whitman 6, British Colum
bia 0; Southern Oregon 20, Lewis
New York, Sept. 26 Ui The
Brooklyn Dodgers were down and
just about out today as a blister
and a bubble both burst at once!
History repeated itself in the
tense sunlight at Ebbets field
yesterday, and in the space of
one short half inning the fatal
eighth just as in 1946, the
Brooks had blown a pennant.
They knew it as they trooped
silently into their dressing room,
their spikes beating a slow dirge.
They slammed gloves disgustedly
Into lockers and no man looked
at his tight-lipped neighbor.
A lew minutes before they had
been leading those pesky Phillies,
3 to 1, and their hopes still were
high of overtaking those front-
flying St Louis Cardinals.
Then a blister broke!
Blister Breaks
Big Ralph Branca had been go
ing along smoothly, but in get
ting the last man in the seventh
a blister on his forefinger had
broken. So they sent out Jack
Banta, a lean young man from
Hutchinson, Kan., with high
hopes that he would keep those
Phillies in check through the
eighth and ninth.
But then the bubble broke!
Blond Richie Ashburn beat out
a bunt Granny Hamner doubled
off the right field wall. Dick Sis
sler showed a shade of his dad
dy's greatness by chopping a two
run single through the middle
that tied it up. Chunky Del Ennis
popped up trying to bunt, and
then catcher Andy Semiseminick
lofted a home run into the left
field stands.
Twice Jackie Robinson com
plained about pickoff calls, but
both times he lost the argument
to Dusty Bogess. And when those
four runs went up on the score
board yoi fe)t, somehow, that the
.Dodgers- were through. The score
was o to 6.
They were, barring a miracle.
And as the Dodgers filed silent
ly into the dressing room and
sat there staring into space, you
looked at a ball club which had
just about run out of gas.
White-haired Burt Shotton, put
squarely on the spot when owner
Branch Rickey called this team
"the finest we've ever had in
Brooklyn," walked through quick
ly with a muttered:
"Can't Win 'Em Ail
Not a man looked up. They had
lost" the one they had to win to
stay alive, for by now the word

Contests Today

question mark pitchers who could
either be very good or very bad.
carried the hopes of the Boston
Red Sox and New York Yankees
today as they squared off in the
bitterest battle yet in the atso
lutely fantastic American league
pennant race.
As the teams, now in a flat
deadlock for first place with only
six more games each to play, met
in Yankee stadium it was Maurice
McDermott for Boston and Tom
my Byrne for New York.
Manager Joe McCarthy of the
Red Sox was entrusting this vital
assignment to a young man who
has not pitched since Aug. 25 be
cause he suffered a sore arm.
Gray-haired Casey Stengel, who
thinks his top-thatch will be snow
white if he ever survives this cam
paign, pinned the Yankee hopes
on lefty Tommy Byrne, a 15-game
winner who also has had painful
kinks in his shoulder of late. '
No Alternatives
Neither manager had any other
logical alternative for this" game,
the first of three the teams will
play in the stadium this week.
McCarthy was fresh out of 20
game winners, having used Ellis
Kinder (23 and 5). and Mel Par-
nell (25 and 7) In subduing the
Yankees two straight at Boston
on Saturday and Sunday. Sten
gel, whose pitching has turned
sour of late, had seen such erst
while aces as Vic Raschi, Ed Lo-
pat and Allie Reynolds get their
bumps in their last assignments
so had to turn to Byrne.
Meanwhile, over the bridge In
Brooklyn it seemed time to drape
the crepe for the Dodgers. Branch
Rickey's kid-powered team, which
fell a game and a half behind the
veteran St. Louis Cardinals yes
terday with only four more in
which to make up the difference.
Only a miracle could save them.
The" Dodgers suffered a 5 to 3 col
lapse against the fighting Phila
delphia Phillies while the Cardin
als won as expected. 6 to 1, from
the last-place Chicago Cubs.
Brooks About Done
Brooklyn must play its four re
maining games, two apiece, with
the third-place Phils and the 1948
champion Boston Braves, while
St Louis plays five more, three
against the casual Cubs and two
against the sixth-place Pittsburgh
Piriates.
For today's game only, the
Yankees would have to be consid
ered favorites if Byrne has con- j
quered the kinks which forced
him to withdraw against the
White Sox last Wednesday.
'He's my stopper and if any
body can win it, he can," said
Stengel.

Preparing
For Eugene
Still smarting from a 13-14 up
set at the hands of the Corvallis
Snartans, the Bend Lava Hears
this afternoon were slated for a
practice session in preparation
lor (heir M'HMy nig.it meeting
with the Eugene Axemen, a
game which on tne basis of the
valley team s record, win lie even
tougher than this past Friday's
tilt.
Heading the Axemen eleven is
Hank Nilsen. former Lava Bear
coach. According to reports, the
Bears and Axemen so far this
season have utilized practically
the same type of offensive for
mations and similar offensive
plays, so it can be expected this
week that both coach Bud Rob
ertson and Nilsen will be busy
hatching up something new to
throw at each other come Fri
day night.
Practice Punting-
One thing is almost certain, the
Bruin squad, after having had
four punts completely blocked
ano one partly blocked in the
Spartan game, will work plenty
this week on giving their half
back punter, Ken Brown, more
protection in the fray with the
Axemen.
Barring any Injuries during
the week, the Bruins should be
at full strength for the Eugene
game. In the clash with Corval
lis this past Friday none of the
Bend players suffered any ser
ious Injury. Tom Niebergall, the
Bruin center, was put out of ac
tion temporarily when he was
jolted severely In making a tac-,
kle, but he was soon on his toes
again, seemingly as well as ever.
The Bend backs, all of whom
turned in standout running per
formances in the Corvallis tilt,
returned to Bend uninjured.

Upsets Feature Opening
Of Big Time Grid Season
By Stan Onotawskv
(United I'reiw Sport Writer)
New York, Sept 26 'If Two
towers of football strength were
toppled and two othei-s were still
dizzy from an awry totter today
with the chalk lines still wet on
the young gridiron season.
Yet, it seemed, this was only
the beginning because new upsets
already loomed on the horizon for
the coming week end.
Pcnn State was billed as the
power of the cast this season, yet
was knocked off by Vlllanova, 27
to 6, Saturday. Vanderbilt seemed
unbeatable in t!ie southeastern
conference, yet fell to 'Georgia
Tech, 12 to 7. And there you had
the beginning of the 1949 upset
parade.
Michigan almost joii-ed it, bare
ly suppressing Michigan State, 7
lo 3, when four State desperation
passes went incomplele on the
Michigan 15-yard line with two
minutes left to play. And Ohio
State, one of the other Big Ten
favorites, squeaked by Missouri,
35 to 34, by the margin of one
toe.
More In Sight
The rambunctious attitudes of
these spoilers and near-spoilers
made more form reversals highly
possible this coming week. Mis
souri, for example, plays South
ern Methodist and could upset the
dope there. The Methodists had
a tough time getting by Wake
Forest, 13 to 6, Saturday. And
Georgia Tech meets Tulane, the
team co-favored with Vandy In
the southeastern. Tulane downed
Alabama, 28 to 14, and may also
be rie for an unexpected black
eye.
And It doesn't stop there.
Army, a 47 to 7 victor over David
son, will catch Penn State on the
rebound, Still shaky Michigan
runs into Stanford, which feasted
on Harvard, 44 to 0, and Villun-
ova plays dangerous Detroit,
which licked Tulsa, 20 to 14.
Otherwise, here is the week's
picture around the nation:
East Penn and Dartmouth
open their seasons against one an
other. Boston College, 46-0 loser
to Oklahoma, plays Wake Forest.
Cornell, which beat Niagara by
27-0, meets Colgate, Navy follows
its 42-20 Southern California loss
by meeting Princeton, 26-14 vic
tor over Lafayette, Yale meets
Fordham and Columbia plays
Harvard.
South Has Good Games
South North Carolina meets
Georgia after beating North Caro
lina state, 2b-b, while Georgia
trounced Chattanooga, 42-6. Ten
nessee, 10-0 winner over Mississip
pi State, plays Duke, which wal
loped Richmond 67-0. And sore
Vandy faces Alabama.
Southwest Texas, 54 0 win
ner over icmpio, meets Idaho, a
410 loser to Oregon. Arkansas,
which rolled over North Texas
State by 3319. plays Texas Chris
tian, the team which played that
amazing tie with Oklahoma
A. A M., 26-7 winner over Texas
Tech. . mH
midwest Illinois, after a 20-20
tie with Iowa State, meets Wis
consin, 41-0 winner from Mar
quette. Michigan State catches
Marquette next. Minnesota, which
won over Washington, 43 to 20,
plays Nebraska. Northwestern
follows Its 20-6 Purdue win with
Pitt, a 13-7 victor over Williams
and Mary. Ohio Slate tangles
with Indiana.
Far West - California downed
St. Mary's, 29-7, and next meets
Oregon Stale. Southern Cal faces
Washington State. Stanford, 44-0
winner over Harvard, faces Mich
igan and Washington catches No
tre Dame after the Irish 49-6 de
but over Indiana. --m f ;:
SMOKE DISAPPEARING

Ihe Yankees was the ninth in a
row for the Red Sox, their 21st
straight at home and their ISth
in the last 22 games.
It was achieved on the four-hit
pitching of Parnell and on the
hitting of Johnny Pesky and Ted
Williams. Pesky drove in the
first two runs with a single, got
three hits for the day and played
brilliantly at third. Williams hit
his 43rd homer for the other two
Boston runs, scoring Pesky ahead
of himself.
