Benson Returns
To Penitentiary
Salem, Sept 21 itPiWllliam P.
Benson, a recaptured escapee, was
back in the Oregon state peniten
tiary today, after leading police
officers over sections of northern
Idaho in a futile search for the
grave of a fellow prisoner.
Benson, who scaled the walls
of the Oregon state penitentiary
on Memorial day, had told offi
cers he buried John O. Pinson, his
companion In the escape, near
i Kellogg, Ida. He said Pinson died
from gunshpf wounds suffered as
they fled the prison.
George A. Kanz, director of the
bureau of identification, and in
vestigation for Oregon, escorted
Benson here from Spokane. He
was accompanied by Don John
son, a prison guard, and Captain
Herders of the state penitentiary
guards. -
Yesterday the officers traveled
to Coeur d'Alene, Ida., 30 miles
east of Spokane, to examine an
automobile thought to be ow.ned
by Pinson.
Coeur d'Alene police found the
car last week during a search for
a man known as Joseph A.l Dor
ian. It contained an arsenal of
guns and ammunition and an ex
tensive set of burglary tools. '
Coeur d'Alene and Spokane po
lice are certain, that Dorian is the
man Benson claims to have bur
ied. Dorian is still at large.
Walter Johnson, Spokane detec
tive, said certain evidence found
in the auto made it clear that a
further search for the grave
would be in vain. The convict and
his guards returned to Salem last
night.
Earlier, Benson had led offi
cers through the Kellogg region
as far east as Saltese, Mont., but
said he could not remember where
he buried Pinson. .
REV. DOBBS DIES
Severance, N.Y., Sept. 21 in
Rev. John Francis Dobbs, 79, died
at his summer home here Tues
day. He was president emeritus
of Pacific University at Forest
Grove, Ore.
Dr. Dobbs took over the presi
dency at Pacific in 1925 and re
signed in 1940. Before that, he
had been an author and pastor of
the First Congregational church
at Maiden, Mass.
He was author of "The Call of
the Nation" and "The Modern
Man and the Church." -

Monument Planned
For Bomb Victims
Klamath Falls, Sept 21 HP
A monument will be erected at
the spot where six persons were
killed May 5, 1945. bv the explo
sion of a bomb which drifted a
across me x-acuic ocean on a Jap
anese balloon.
The six victims, all members of
a picnicking party near Bly, Ore.,
were believed to be the only per
sons killed as a result of enemy
action on continental United
States during the war.
The monument, including a
bronze plaque, will be erected
and maintained by the'W'eyer-haouser-Timber
Co.

Tuesday night Sawyer told the
board of directors of the Portland
chamber of commerce he believed
the effect of the British and Can

' He pointed out "there will prob
ably be less price change than

quarters."

fects of devaluation will be in
